Alfie vs Iggy

When it comes to NHL players, these are definitely two of the best all around guys in the league without a doubt. However, one of them (Iginla) has a MUCH higher profile, seeminly undeserved. With them playing each other tonight, I thought that we should look at all the facts.

Both are longtime serving captains on Canadian teams, which means more scrutiny and pressure. Both are two way, all around players, although Iginla would get an edge in the tough department. Alfie would get the edge in the skill department in my opinion. Both have made one Stanley Cup Finals appearance (both lost) and both are their respective teams all time leading scorer.

Well when I heard that Iginla became the Flames all time leading scorer the other day and heard the point total I was shocked. Jarome has 834 career points as of today, with 922 career games. Good for .90 points a game for his career. Pretty decent for sure, especially in this day and age. However, Daniel Alfredsson has 903 points in 912 career games, which is .99 points per game over his career.

So why does Alfie get so little love in the league? It's not right at all. Nothing against Iginla, he's by all accounts a great guy (which I can confirm when I met him) and a great all around player, but so is Alfie. However Iginla is always viewed as the much better player. Most see him as a top 5 guy in the league but Alfie is never mentioned, despite the fact they are very similar players and Alfie outscores him by 10% per game over their careers. The numbers simply don't add up.

This isn't hating on Iggy, it's loving Alfie. He doesn't get the respect he deserves and it's a shame. Just another chapter in the legend of ALFstradamus.

ALFIE ALFIE ALFIE!!!

I'm going to have to go with the fact that Iggy is Canadian and we live in Canada as the reason that he has a higher profile. Also, Iginla helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Salt Lake which ranks up their in the heights of Canada sport. Plus, Iginla is a goal scorer and 'chicks dig the long ball'.

Two reasons.

1) Goal scoring. Iggy has 2 50+ goal seasons, Alfy has zero.

2) Durability. Alfy has failed to play in 70 games 4 times (!!!) during the course of his career. Iggy has never failed to play in 70 games.

That extra 10 % in scoring probably comes from having a dany heatly to feed pucks to. Has iginla had anybody like that to pick up assists from?

Iginla any day over Alfredsson.

50-goal scorer, he fights, hits makes everyone around him better and he's a good Canadian boy.

Alfie is the heart and soul of his team but come on...

Boy, you've got some bad anonymouses here. I always love people who use "your" instead of "you're" as they're spewing vitriol, makes them sound extra-smart.

Anyway, Shaun is right. Canadian hockey fans lean towards Canadian hockey players, especially guys with "heart," which nobody argues Iggy has in spades.

I'm a Calgary guy, but you'll never hear me argue against Alfreddson. Great player.

2 goals in the gold medal game during the Salt Lake Olympics surely has nothing to do with why we love St. Jerome...
