There are things in the world I just don't understand. These things include the massive appeal of American Idol (30 million people watching glorified kareoke, really?), the Jonas Brothers (when I went to high school, these guys would have been made fun of and a girl would never look at them. Now being a virgin is something to brag about?) and don't forget people in their 20's and 30's all of a sudden obsessed with Vampires (Twilight) and Wizards (Harry Potter). I just don't get it. It makes me feel nostalgic for the good old days. You know, when Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters ruled the airwaves. Sometimes feel like I'm taking crazy pills, which brings me to my point. Why is everyone so obsessed and in love with Erik Karlsson? I just don't get his hype. The kid is decent I admit but nothing special yet, but everyone is drinking the future all star kool aid, without any reason to justify it. He's small, inexperienced and so far hasn't shown us much to even think he will be around in another 8 games, when they must decide to send him back to Bingo or Sweden, or waste a year of his rookie deal, let alone be an elite NHL'er. So why is everyone overhyping him here in Ottawa? If anything, Sens 2009 1st rounder Jared Cowen, is far more likely to be an impact player for us. To me, he is a sure thing, he's a stud. He will make that soundbite of Brian Burke smugly saying he's taking Kadri to Murray, look like one of the dumbest moves of the last decade, by passing up on a 6ft5 stud dman with so much upside.
This isn't meant to hate on young Erik Karlsson. He has no control over what everyone thinks and of course he wants to play in the NHL, but rather a condemnation of Sens Army, who are jumping the gun a little bit. Relax everyone, breathe and give the kid some time to grow, and maybe his results will catch up to your already annointed elite status.
I like to think we're more intelligent fans then our provincial rivals (Toronto: Pogge before he was dealt for pucks) and our neighbors in la belle province (Montreal: Latendresse, S. Kostitsyn), who overhype the lamest of prospects.
So Sens Amry, all I ask is to be more realistic with your assessments and to ease up a little bit on the undeserved man crush this fan base has, for someone who at present time, has more flash then substance.
What do you think, am I crazy? Am I right? Let's hear what you've got to say readers.

I could not agree more with your blog, well said. For heavens sakes the kid played 45 games in the SEL last yr, and only 7 the year before: All on the big ice. As we saw last night the game is much faster on the smaller nhl size rinks with higher quality players.
BUT, the reason people are jacked about this kid is bc there isn't anything else to hope for on the defence. you see, the sens have one of the softest weakest d`s in the league.
get used to the result from the rangers game - there`s going to be a whole lot more of that all year. I just hope Chris Neil & Carkner`s faces can take that pounding all year...
Nice rant, couldnt agree more either. I dont get the crazy hype over him either. Well written, couldnt agree more, good work
Philips appears to be on the decline, Kuba is very soft, Volchie still a warrior, Campoli still unproven, Picard a healthy scratch and Carkner has 1 NHL game prior to this year. So we need some hope for our defence and Karlsson is it for now.
The hype is probably excessive for a smallish 19 year old, but let’s look at the positives. He won the top defenseman of the 2008 world junior tournament. He is rooming with King Alfie. He can skate like the wind and is very smart. Yes, he is undersized, but he has great offensive potential.
He does have some potential but most people are acting like he's already scott niedermayer
