As I said in tonight's GDP, expect the unexpected and the Senators definitely delivered on that front. They played an awful game and have very few positives to take away, other then the 2 points. It only seems fitting that they would earn their first shutout of the season in a game they didn't deserve to win. Your 2009-10 Ottawa Senators.Thoughts from the game:
-Brian Elliott redeemed hismelf. While he didn't make tons of spectcaular saves, he didn't have to. More importantly was that he didn't let in any weak ones that kill your teams confidence. He had a good game and got his 2nd career shutout. Congrats!
-Our powerplay is pathetic. We were 0 for 7 on Tuesday and 0 for 6 tonight. Some changes need to be made, either to the personel or the coaching staff who is in charge of this. It's unacceptable.
-What a gorgeous pass from Kovalev that Foligno somehow missed the net completely on. Am I the only one who doesn;t hate Kovalev? Call me crazy but at least twice a night he makes an insane pass that someone SHOULD score on if we had better finishers. I will have nightmares for missing out on Heatley finishing his stunning passes.
-Speaking of Foligno, you gotta love the kid. He always plays hard and tries his best, he just doesn't have it. He is basically playing to his potential, just many of us, myself included may have overrated him. Excellent hard work and 2nd effort on his goal tonight.
-Another bad game from Karlsson. I wouldn't even notice him if it wasn't for his bad plays. By the way, I thought his strong suit was his skating, yet every shift, someone skates by him like he isn't even there. Mark my words, this will come back to cost us at some point. Can we trade him now while the rest of the league doesn't know he's a bust yet?
-Carkner, I love ya buddy but you can't take that penalty there. Luckily it didn't cost us.
-Still taking way too many penalties, most are unecessary. How do these guys not know to play a smarter game? Triple C must be going crazy.
-Seriously what is wrong with Spezza?
Well they say that winning games you shouldn't is the sign of a good team, and we won tonight when we had no business getting anything out of it. Still I can't say I feel good about our play at all, but I am happy we got the 2 points and won on the road. Back at it Saturday against Carolina.
Thoughts?

The only thing that has bothered me about Kovalev is his comments about him missing Montreal and about going to the Hall of Fame as a Hab.
Kovalev will not make the HOF. He doesn;t have the numbers at all.
Agree about Kovalev.
Karlsson is obviously not good right now, I think we have to wait and see how he plays once he gets bigger before we call him a bust.
I think Elliot had a great game tonight, and we did play well without the puck.
The Sens look slow, they were also having major issues getting the puck out of their end and half the time they did get it out it was to a Flyer.
They do not seem to win any battles on the powerplay, but what they really need is a capable point man/quarterback.
Good work by Foligno, did Kelly show some signs of hands tonight?
I think one of the main reasons for Kovie's lack of production is that he no longer gets to play the Senators.
I think the post is mostly Bang On. As for Karlsson, I think he's just not NHL ready yet but there must be politics preventing him from playing in the AHL where he belongs. All the former players (like Eastwood, Galley) who comment on the games are saying the same thing. I don't think he'll be a bust, I just think he'll develop slowly and might get scarred by being rushed.
Karlsson a bust? Come on now, I know you haven't liked the "kid" for some time now but I think the "Kid" has tonnes of potential, not his fault Murray is rushing him cause he refuses to anti up for a NHL ready PPQB.
Are you kidding me? Erik Karlsson played an amazing game in Montreal if you actually might have watched the game and he played fine in Philadelphia. He has improved and I wouldn't be surprises at all if he stays. The guy was drafted for his skills and his skills are showing.
The best offensive defenseman inthe league (Chara, Boyle, Weber, Green, Bouwmeester)played their first year in the NHL and weren't very good. Now, all of them are elite guys on the blueline with tons of skill and leadership. Just watch next year what a player Karlsson will blossom into.
Think before you write dude.
albanada,
Ive watched every game this season, especially those at SBP where i have season tickets. The kid isnt good at all. he brings nothing to the table and if he was anyone but murrays pet 1st round pick, he wouldnt be given any of these chances. I thought we were about accountability? guess not
Im not saying he cant be an ok player at some point in his career, but at this point he hasnt shown us anything to suggest he will be.
His saving grace was supposed to be the PP where he has ZERO goals and an incredible 4 points wow!!
His alleged offensive upside hasnt materialized yet and his defencive play has been downright awful and a liability.
Unless he magically grows 3 inches and puts on 30 lbs, i dont see him doing much.
Ya you can site Chara and Green and Boyle etc and i could site you 500 guys who didnt make it.
Albana, you should think before you write - EK has now played more than the max amount of games for a rookie in 1 year. Thus he has now burned a year on his contract and HAS TO STAY. Its not even up for debate, he is now officialy on the team all year.
Think before YOU write.
I also think he is shit. Terrible decision by the sens to burn a year and keep him with the big club. He's clearly not ready and should be in the minors.
Many people are so confused about what it means that Karlsson has played more than 10 NHL games. It just means that the first year of his Entry-Level contract kicks in. It doesn't mean anything about him being able to be sent to the AHL or even Sweden as many times as the team would like all season. He is still waiver exempt under the rules of the CBA.
Just because it's possible, it doesn't mean that's what the team will do.
The next marker is at 40 NHL games played. If for any reason Karlsson doesn't play 40 games with the Sens this year, he is not a year closer to unrestricted free agency. While the first year of his ELC is used up, he still remains a resticted free agent until age 26. If he plays 40 or more this year, he can be a UFA at 25.
