Sens Prospects Named To Canadian Camp

With the World Junior Championships coming up at the end of the month is Sakatchewan, the Canadian Team today announced their roster for their selection camp. Two Sens prospects made the cut and both are defenceman. Jared Cowen, the Sens 1st round pick last year, 9th overall was named, all 6 ft 5 and 226 lbs of him, as well as 6 ft 5 and 198 pounder Patrick Wiercioch, from the Univeristy of Denver. The future looks bright on the backend for the Sens.

Thoughts?

It is good to see that the Sens might have a good D again in the near future, especially if they can get something from Karlsson and Lee.

I still think resigning the A-Train is a must though.

Is Spezza the most recent Sens draft pick to become a impact player in the NHL? I don't think Foligno is there yet nor Elliot. Maybe they better reevaluate their scouting system or something, that is a long period not to develop any impact players

You have to take into consideration though that we werent picking very high for awhile with our team being good for many years

Still, like everyone else has found guys, and not always in the 1st round. Even if you look at a team like the Canucks who are really not know for drafting, they have developed Kesler and Burrows into impact players. Maybe the Leafs are the only team that has been worse than us. The Sens used to be a team that was know for good drafting but if I am not mistaken much of our scouting staff took better jobs elsewhere. So, I am just saying that maybe the Sens need to re-evaluate their scouting. Not that you can look at one pick but imagine if they had picked Kopitar instead of Lee in 05.

True, but you also have to know we traded away some of our prospects to try and get immediate help as we were trying to make cup runs.

And at the time, we took lee knowing he was a project since we had no roster spots open.

I mean kopitar is a nice player for sure but at the same time, in every draft there are 10 players or more that people dont take and later it seems like a no brainer but at the time it wasnt a great pick type thing

I agree but the in the 02 draft (8 drafts) and on these are the players the Sens have taken after the first round that have played in the NHL
C. Bass, A. Nikulin, Z. Smith, B. Elliot, and A. Kaigorodov, and from the first round Mezaros, Foligno and Eaves are full time NHLers.

Overall they have not done that badly, but I think their biggest problem is that after the first round they have gamble alot on Euros that have not even ended up in their system. I think it is a safer bet to look for late bloomers in Major Junior because those guys at least get a chance to develop in their system.

true but now they have Cowen and Wiercioch who are both Canadian and are both big guys and big time prospects

They still need to develop some forwards though are they are going to keep paying $2m a piece for the 2 worst Chriss on the team, and $5m for Kovalev.

i believe you mean 2 out of the 3 worst chris' no?

As much as his salary is insane and ive hated on him a lot for it, Neil has layed pretty well and i think we miss him not in the lineup.

Campoli and Kelly on the other hand..........

oh ya, didn't even realize we had 4 Chris', and yes Neil has played well this year. He has taken the puck hard to the net, but he has taken way to many penalties.
