Complaints & Grievances: 50/50 Draw

I'm for charity, you're for charity, everyone is for charitable operations. I mean try and find me one person who is against helping people out, right? Well I love all the work the Sens Foundation does for local charities and all but I have a complaint about their 50/50 draw.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the object of any charitable operation to get the most amount of money possible for their organization? So why did they change the rules and only sell tickets through the 1st intermission, instead of through the 2nd intermission, which they had previously done for years. I'm no accountant, but selling for half the amount of time results in less money, as evidenced by the payouts they announce. It used to always be close to the maximum amount they were allowed to pay, but now it hovers around 10-13k each game.

So why the change? Why deprive charities of an extra say 5,000 a game or so? The other night I witnessed numerous people asking ushers where they could buy tickets and they were told they don't sell them past the 1st intermission. You should have seen the look on their faces, it was priceless. Like they couldn't believe what kind of stupid decision this was to turn away money. I have to agree.

The Sens Foundation does a lot of good work, and way more often then not, they excel not fail, but this is definitely something they should correct, along with the rule of only having 30 minutes after the game to claim the prize or they get it your winnings. Should the winner not have a few days to claim it? Seems a bit greedy to me. Other lotteries from the OLG tend to have months if not a full year to claim it.

My point is in this economic downturn, when someone wants to help out a charitable cause and donate money via the popular 50/50 draw, we shouldn't be cutting it back, but rather working with the fans to ensure they have more time to buy tickets, thus making more money for the Sens Foundation and local charities.

Thoughts?

Agreed! I have to say in all the years I have been going to games... not once have I actualy seen someone win! you would think from time to time you would see someone stand up and shout they won. another rumour that seems to be going around is that the 5$ tickets never win, Its only the 10$ones that they draw. not sure if there is truth to that though

I think it's always been cut off at the 1st intermission, that's not new this year. But why is the prize lower this year? I don't know

I'm a season ticket holder and purchase 50/50 tickets regularly. I know for a fact that the cut off is the 2nd intermission as I have a routine my friends and I follow while at the games. For those of you who don't know how 50/50 works the total prize is a result of the number of tickets sold. The more tickets sold the higher the prize up to I guess $20K. $20k is likely only achieved when all 50/50 tickets are sold as in past seasons when sell outs were common $20k prizes were as well. The lower prizes are a result of the poor attendance this season.

Did you confirm your facts before posting this? Isn't that the first rule of journalism? I hope you post the correct information shortly. This is for a charitable cause after all.

Do you know how long it takes to count the money? Maybe instead of throwing rumours around you should volunteer at one of the games and see how hard they work. Also I've seen many winners at guest services after the games. You can also go to the sens foundation website and see the names of the winner.

Dear Supersensfan,

Maybe you should know the rules before criticisizing, go to the official rules on the official site for the Sens Foundation and it clearly says they stop selling after the FIRST INTERMISSION NOW!!!

as you can clearly see here:

http://sensfoundation.com/eng/foundationevents/50-50-lottery-rules.cfm

As well as the fact the always announce it on the PA that it's til the end of the 1st intermission, as well as the fact ive seen people routinely ask ushers about it and they tell them the same and of course once again it's in THEIR OWN RULES!!!!

Therefor I'm right, as I knew I was, isn't the first rule of being an asshole is to critisize, only to find out you don't know what the fuck youre talking about?

PS- The attendance might have a small bit to to with the payouts but not much, it's the fact they sell way less time. We're averaging about 1000-1500 less people a game, which is around 5% less then seasons before, yet the payouts used to routinely be 20k or at least 17 or 18k, so you're telling me that those 5% of people are buying that many more tickets?

No way man!

Anyways, maybe next time you will not jump to conclusion and assume I didn't research or know what I'm talking about before researching yourself, especially when the rules are posted in the article.

Cheers

Dave,

Yes I'm sure it takes awhile to count the money but they did it for years and years the other way, which resulted in more sales and they still managed to count the money in time and if not, by a money counter, it will be paid for in one game and then you can get an exrta 30% or more in sales per game, which makes a big difference. I wasn't talking out of my ass here, they used to do it til the end of the 2nd intermission and always had it counted in time for the winner so no biggie on that front.

About the winners on their website etc, i dont get your point?

You only have 30 mins after the game to claim your prie and if you dont, the Sens Foundation know owns it. It's right in their own rules

Mr Mayor,

When was the last tiume you were at a game? I suggest actually going to one and seeing for yourself. In fact I'll see if I can get you a ticket if you'd be interested. My partner would love to donate his seat for an experiment of this nature.

I don't see the need for the exclaimation points or harsh language.

Did you not read the post? I was at the last game, as I always am, I'm a season ticket holder.

Read the rules on the site and look around the building. maybe you have one person who sells them to you randomly after their supposed to but other then that they don't.

Update: I just spoke to someone who is in charge of the 50/50 draw, we will be discussing all the details of it in the near future and I will post what happens from it, probably in a new piece

Hi, I won the 50/50 at a recent game with the 3 for $5 ticket.

I had no idea there was a 1/2 hour limit to turn in the ticket! I watched the end of the game & then went up slowly through the crowds...glad I made it in time!
