Ruutu Brings Home A Bronze

Congratulations goes out to Jarkko Ruutu, for winning a bronze medal with Team Finland at the Olympics. He was the only Senator player to win a medal at the games. Luckily for us, none of our players were hurt either during the games, so we will be pretty healthy when the NHL season picks up again on Tuesday. Congrats again Jarkko from Sens Town.

Olympic Semi Final Wrap Up: North America Wins The Night

Well that was interesting. The 2 teams I picked won, but in reverse order. The US ended up embarassing Finland, while Canada had a tough time with Slovakia, the opposite of what I expected. But in the end the results are all that matters and North America owned the day, with both teams making the gold medal game. Loved seeing my boy Getzlaf score the game winner for the win.

Sunday at 3pm, an epic rematch for all the marbles. Gold medal game, Canada vs the United States, revenge is sweet.

What did you think about today's semi's?

Sens Re-Up Shannon

Not the signing everyone was hoping for exactly, but Ryan Shannon has been resigned to a one year contract worth 675k, which is a 75k raise from this year. I can't really complain about signing him to such a reasonable contract for what he brings to the table. Good depth signing by BM.

Does this mean perhaps someone else is now expendable? I would think perhaps yes.

Trade deadline is Wednesday march 3rd at 3pm eastern.

Thoughts on re-signing Shannon?

Olympic Questions & Answers

With the Olympics coming to an end and the semi's of hockey about to jump off, I figured I'd take some time to answer some of the questions I've been getting from readers since the games started. Enjoy....

Q: Who is your favorite player on Team Canada? Who are your other favorites on the other teams? -Arnold

A: On Canada, Getzlaf by a mile, though I know he isn't very popular. How do I know this? I've looked everywhere for a Getzlaf Canada tee and no one has it. After Getzlaf I'd say Nash and Doughty. (shoutout to the Kings). Other teams I'd say Alfie of course, Peter Forsberg, Teemu Selanne , Ovechkin, Erik and Jack Johnson and Martin Havalt ( I know I know)

Q: What was your favorite game so far? -Nicholas

A: Slovakia/Russia was a pretty good, none have been a classic yet though in my opinion.

Q: Did you watch the womens games? -Jennie

A: No I didn't, not even a second. While we're at it, until the rest of the world catches up in level of play, can the US and Canada just play a best of 7 series for the gold instead? The 3rd and 4th best teams in the world shouldn't be losing 13-1, plus I just find it too slow and no hitting just isn't doing it for me sorry ladies.

Q: I've been going to most of the games, jealous? -Evan

A: Fuck you!

Q: When I heard them play Ole when goals were scored, I automatically thought of you, imagining how mad you must have been, is that weird of me? -Jordan

A: I'm flattered but don't swing that way, not that there's anything wrong with that Jordan. But seriously, they couldn't have picked a worse song. It's used by an NHL team already, it's Spanish and it's a soccer song. That has what to do with Canada again? Good job VANOC.

Q: Who's impressed you so far? - Kayla

A: Ryan Miller, but I was already impressed with him all year. Erik Johnson is really good and underrated in Canada. Um I was unaware of how good Shea Weber is and same with Miko Koivu. Drew Doughty has been really good but with the Kings being my west coast team, I already knew that. Halak has been great too.

Q: Who do you think has the best and worst jerseys? - Kevin

A: I hate the Canada crest, sorry but I do. I'm partial to Sweden and Norway as the best jerseys and Russia/Switzerland as a tie for worst.

Q: Did you see the crazy fan with the red light on his head? Am I crazy or was he at the World Jr's too? - Jared

A: Is this from Jared Cowen? Yes I have seen him and yes he was at the world jr's too. How can anyone be successful enough to have the money to attend all that and the stupidity to wear a red light on their head and look like Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys? These are the things I think of.

Q: So we're down to 4 teams. Who's in the final and who wins? -Johnny

A: USA and Canada win, setting up a rematch and Canada pulls another Russia and wins easily. Revenge is sweet.

What To Do About The A-Train?

The NHL trade deadline is Wednesday at 3pm eastern. That's only 4 days away and we have a few burning questions. Do we roll the dice and make a move for a big defenceman that may cost us some of our future or do we stand pat? Do we add another forward or was Matt Cullen our play in that regard? But the biggest question to me and I imagine most Sens fans is what do we do about Anton Volchenkov?

Now I'm sure most of you are thinking, what do you mean what do we do? We keep him for the playoffs and see what happens, he'll end up signing I'm sure. That would be nice, but unfortunately we don't live in fanatsy land. With cap space being so important, you can't afford to overpay players and you can't afford to lose players for nothing as an UFA. It can kill a franchise.

Now here's where it gets tricky. Do we stand pat and risk losing him for nothing or do we realize we can't sign him or aren't willing to meet his salary demands and trade him to a contender. Think of what Volchenkov brings to the table. One of the league's best shotblockers, a gritty stay at home defenceman and a guy who will play with 2 broken legs if it's possible. Sounds like a great pickup for the playoff run to me for say Washington. I know it's not the best scenario and it would be awful to see A-Train go, but not thinking about trading him if we can't sign him is naive and plain stupid.

Bryan Murray has said he wants to sign him and I want him here, but at what price? At 4.5 million or more a year? Hell no! Is he a valuable player? Of course he is, but he isn't a star and never will be and he doesn't even have 100 career points in 7 seasons in the league. As they say, you can't pay defenceman who don't put up points big time money. It's just a bad call and can ruin your franchise.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Volchenkov and his agent are looking for bigger money then Murray thinks he's worth or they would have had a deal by now. It might be a bit hard to swallow, but if he wants big money, we have to trade him and get something back in return. It's just the way of the new NHL.

Hopefully they can get something done in the next few days and he remains a Sen for a long time at a reasonable, fair rate of pay. Something like 3.5 million a year for 5 years would be good for both sides, but we need to be realistic and his time may be coming to an end in Ottawa, that is if Murray has the guts to trade him and do what's best for the franchise long term.

The only worry I have is that Murray seems to love to overpay when resigning our own guys. See Neil, Fisher and Kelly contracts as proof. I don't know why but I have an awful feeling this won't end well, hopefully I'm very wrong.

Welcome Back Brian Lee

Sens defenceman Brian Lee has been recalled from Binghamton to join the big club. He was brought back up due to the injury to Chris Campoli, which should keep him out of the lineup for another 2 weeks or so. Brian Lee is no stranger to going back and forth, though he likely won't be here too long with the traded deadline coming ina few days. Welcome back Brian, enjoy it while you can.

"I was really disappointed that these guys came with their, their Eurotrash game" - Mike Milbury

Leave it to Mike Milbury to put his foot in his mouth on national television. Hey at least he isn't screwing over franchises anymore right? How this guy continues to be employed is beyond me, but anyways watch the clip, it's funny I swear.

Love the announcer chirping him at the end too.

Olympic Quarterfinal Day Wrap Up: Canada & Slovakia Win The Night

Well that was a shocker. Who saw that coming? No one, that's who.

I definitely thought Canada was capable of beating the Russians but to deliver such a beat down was truly shocking. The Canucks played a great game from puck drop and Russia was never really in the game. To be honest, they looked disinterested and many of their big stars failed to show up. On to the next one.

Which brings us to their oponent for their semi game, Slovakia, who played a gutsy game and took out the defending champion Swedes 4-3. Unfortunately, this means no gold for Alfie, but an easier team for Canada, which is always good news. Don't feel too bad, he already has a gold anyways and now he gets a few extra days of rest for the Sens. The Slovaks scored the 2 biggest upsets of the tourney, beating Russia and now Sweden, so they shouldn't be taken lightly. They will be particularly familiar to Sens supporters, as they have a few ex Sens on the sqaud. There's Zdeno Chara, Marian Hossa and Andrej Meszaros of course. We will see what happens on Friday.

In one of the other 1/4 finals, the US held on barely to beat a very frisky Swiss team 2-0. Switzerland were in it all game but just couldn't bury their chances and it ended up costing them in the end, but Anaheim sure has a good goalie in Hiller that's for sure. I'm praying for a US-Canada final so we can whipe that cocky, smug look of their faces. Was it just me or did they look WAY too happy and cocky after their empty netter to secure today's win? Congratulations on barely beating a completely overmatched team in every aspect. You didn't win the superbowl, you didn't win the gold, you barely survived. Act like it!

And in the final 1/4 final, Finland took out the Czech's with a 2-0 win of their own. This was a very tight game down to the very end and could have gone either way but tough to win when you can't score a goal, so Suomi gets to move on to play the US on Friday.

So there you have it, what did you think of the games? This now means 4 of the 5 Sens players are out, only Jarkko Ruutu remains. Daniel Alfredsson, Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba and Anton Volchenkov are all done and thank god no one got hurt.

Other thoughts from the game:

-Was awesome to watch Forsberg play again, he's one of my all time faves

-Did Ovechkin, Malkin or Kovalchuk even play? They were invisible

-The A-Train looked very ordinary tonight

-Sorry to see Alfie is done but at least he's still healthy

-Once again the crowd looked amazing, I'm jealous of anyone who went

We Want Russia, Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap

Well we got em. The Canadian fans were feeling pretty good late last night, so they started the we want Russia chant and I have to say it sounded pretty awesome. So tonight we get the final everyone was hoping for, but in the 1/4 finals at 7:30pm, along with the other 3 quarterfinals all today. It's a great day for hockey, but for one superpower, the Olympics will be over and no medal will be awarded.

The first game is at 3pm eastern and is the United States vs Switzerland. I think the States are way too cocky at this point and aren't that good. What they do have is a great goalie in Ryan Miller, who's playing great too and that makes all the difference in the world. Switzerland also has a good goalie in Hiller but lacks talent in other areas and always has trouble scoring. I could see the Americans stumbling here if Switzerland could get some goals. USA wins 4-2 in a very close game.

The 2nd game is the big one, the classic, Canada v Russia @ 7:30pm. Pre Olympics, most people thought this would probably be the gold medal game, but now it's a 1/4 final and the loser will have a lot of explaining to do. It's a game for pride, for passion, for all those battle we used to have. There's still nothing better then Canada/Russia for my money. Hard to predict this one at all, they're both stacked so I'm going with the home team. Canada wins 5-4 and the country can breathe again, but don't be suprised if the Russians bounce us either. Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Datsuk, Malkin, Radulov, etc etc etc are scary as hell.

The 3rd game is a pretty solid game itself, with the Fins taking on the Czechs at 10pm. This game is hard to predict as both are pretty solid teams, both have scoring and defence, and even two good goalie in Kipper and Vokoun. Seems like a push if I was betting on these, which I am definitely not since gambling is illegal ;) But for arguments sake, who would you go with? I'd say that the Fins are probably the favorites in this but only slightly. I'm gonna say the Czechs score a mild upset and win this 4-2, with Michalek scoring and Kuba sucking.

And the finale of le soiree, Sweden vs Slovakia. This seems like an easy win for the 3 crowns to me. Slovakia played last night and barely beat Norway, so that means they're inferior and tired. Sweden is the way better team and win this going away 6-2.

Thoughts on my thoughts? Who you got winning?

Trade Winds Are Gusting

What's that you say, actual Senators news? No way!

Ok so I may have exagerated the news part, more like rumors or specualtion at this point, but anything to get us to not think about last night's Canada game right?

We all know the NHL Olympic roster freeze is in full effect but that hasn't stopped GM's from talking and making deals. Expect many to be announced as soon as the freeze has been lifted on the 28th. The Sens of course, are in the market for a defenceman, or maybe 2, though I'd settle for one.

My personal prefence would be either Pavel Kubina, Dam Hamhuis or Thomas Kaberle, the latter being pretty unlikely and would cost us and arm and a leg. Cool reference I know.

With that in mind, let's get in the mood, since the trade deadline is less then 10 days away now.

The Ottawa Citizen has compiled a list of potential players to acquire, seems we're on the same page with some, though the analysis is lacking.

Our good buddies at Silver Seven have put up a list of our past trade deadline acquisitions, it isn't pretty, though it's a really good read as always.

After reading that, you realize that although it seems sexy to pick someone up for a cup run, it basically never pans out and you are mortgaging your future. Having said that (LD), I still think we need another defenceman to have any shot this year and really, just for the future too. That is is our goaltending doesn't kill us down the stretch.

So what are your thoughts? Who would you like to see in a Sens uni and what would you be willing to give up?

Olympic Hockey Wrap Up Day VI: Brian Burke Wins The Night

So much for a Super Sunday right? Brian Burke and Team USA won the day, beating Canada 5-3 to win the group and make us play an extra game on Tuesday. Oh ya, say goodbye to a Russia-Canada final as well. If we win Tuesday, we play Russia in the quarter's on Wednesday. Bet Burkie had a smile from ear to ear.

The atmosphere of the game was amazing but we just never seemed to get it going, which seems to be a theme for this team. If we don't get it going soon, we might have another embrassing situation on our hands, this time on home soil.

At least Alfie and the A-train got the wins.

Thoughts from the day:

-Thanks to team Russia, who have possibly lowered Volchenkov's value on his upcoming contract by playing him mostly on the 3rd pairing. Also less chance he gets hurt.

-Nice goal by Michalek

-Love seeing Ruutu stir it up. Am I the only one who never gets tired of him?

-What happened to Marty Brodeur? What an awful game.

-Ryan Miller is the 2009-10 MVP

-Didn't the Americans seem WAY too happy to win a prelim game? It wasn't the gold medal game guys.

-We lost it ourself, they didn't really outplay us.

-Say what you will, and I've said plenty, but Dany Heatley continues to produce at an amazing pace for Team Canada

-Some of our veterans are looking really old

With all the Olympic hockey on, I'm sure many of you forgot that the AHL held it's 1st ever outside game yesterday, a game that featured our farm team, the Binghamton Senators. Olympic Hockey Day 6: Previews & Predictions

So the Olympic tourney really gets going today, with 3 outstanding matchups, dubbed Super Sunday. Very original I know. In fact, they are rematches of the last 3 gold medal games. Finally some rivalries, finally the good teams play each other and yes, the Sens players will be featured heavily in these games. I come in to these games 14-1 in my predcitions, but most of them were pretty easy, so the real predicting starts for me today as well.

The first game is at 3pm eastern and is Russia vs Czech Republic, which features 3 Sens players. Anton Volchenkov for Russia and Milan Michalek and Filip Kuba for the Czechs. The Russians headed into the Olympics as one of the favorites and are coming off a shootout loss to Slovakia. Look for them to come out and plkay well, trying to revive their reputation as the team to beat. For the Czechs, they are 2-0 and looking pretty good, especially in net with Vokoun. They aren't as talented as the Ruski's, but definitely have enough skill to beat anyone on any given Sunday. This should be a great game but in the end, Russia is too talented and are coming in with a chip on their shoulder. Russia wins 6-3.

The 2nd game is at 7:40pm and is the biggest one to most of us. It's the battle of North America, Canada vs the US, in a rematch of 2002's gold medal game. This has become a very good rivalry as of late, especially in the world jr's, and is always a passionate game. The US are 2-0 and have won fairly easily so far, while Canada has faced some adversity, only being able to beat Switzerland in a shootout. Perhaps a coutry's high expectations are getting to them? More of a burden then a blessing, but look for them to get up for this game big time. The Canadian's are the more talented team by far, but the States do play hard and they do have a great goalie in Ryan Miller, who would be my NHL MVP so far. With great goaltending you just never know. It might be tough at the start, but I see Canada playing well tonight, as they have their motivation in spades. Canada wins 5-2.

In the finale, which takes place at midnight eastern, is a rematch of the Torrino gold medal game, Sweden vs Finland, and features Daniel Alfredsson and Jarkko Ruutu from the Senators. This will be a very entertaining game I think, filled with skill and back and forth action. I'm excited to watch it. Finland isn't the most talented but do have a lot of NHL players and a great goalie, but so does Sweden. The score will look worse then the game was but Sweden wins 5-2.

Olympic Hockey Wrap Up Day IV: Teemu Selanne Wins The Night

Day 4 is now in the books and most of the weak games are out of the way thankfully. Tomorrow will be a bit of a down day, but Sunday will be awesome, with 3 sweet games on. All rematches of the past 3 gold medal games.

Of course the big news of the day in hockey circles, is that Teemu Selanne broke the all time Olympic point record, with 37 career points now, over 5 Olympics. The 39 year old broke it with an assist on the Fins powerplay goal in the 2nd period. Shoutout to Teemu on the major accomplishment and because well, he's one my mom's favorite all time players. Good enough for me.

Thoughts from the day:

-The German goalies look decent, too bad they can't score. Shutout in 3 straight games going back to Torrino

-Doesn't Niklas Backstrom seem like he should be Swedish?

-Good to see Milan Michalek get a point today

-Extra nice to see Alfie potting a pair. He looked good in between the Sedins.

-Sweden sure had to sweat that win out, the Monster is an overrated, completely average ad forgettable goalie who was hyped up because he plays in Toronto.

Thoughts on Day 4?

Alfie x 2

Shoutout to the Captain, who last night scored a pair of goals in Sweden's 4-2 victory over the overmatched Belarussians. Congrats Aflie.

Olympic Hockey Wrap Up Day III: Demitra Wins The Night

We have the first upset of the tournament, as Slovakia beat Russia in a shootout. Goals from former Sen Hossa and then Demitra scored the shootout winner on a beauty. It also handed me my first loss but I didn't mind at all. I'm know 8-1, still pretty good I think.

Then there was another surprise as Canada had to rely on a shootout to get the win as well, winning 3-2 in a shootout, with Crosby getting the winner. I must say it's weird to be cheering for guys you usually hate but at least we did get the win. Crowd was going crazy, awesome atmosphere.

And in the other game, the US beat em up Norway, who just couldn't handle them.

Thoughts from the day:

-Was it wrong that I was happy when Heatley got injured for a few minutes there?

-Halak was very solid. If I was the Habs I' be trading Price.

-Hiller was outstanding

-Chara looks good to me, don't know why Boston fans are complaining

-Apparently the rules don't apply to Ovechkin

-Meszaros still sucks

Olympic Hockey Day 3: Previews & Predictions

Welcome to day 3 of Olympic hockey, where another triple header is ahead of us, including Canada tonight. Once again, there's games at 3pm, 7:30pm and then midnight, all eastern times of course. So let's get to it.

First game up is the Americans against the Norwegians at 3pm, in which should be a tougher game then you'd think. In the end, the US just have way better talent and will outlast Norway. I predict a US win, 5-1.

Next up is the big one, Canada vs Switzerland at 7:30. The Swiss are a sneaky team and have a pretty good goalie in Jonas Hiller, the Anaheim #1. They played pretty tough against the US the other day but in the end, we're the way superior team. Canada wins 6-1.

Last up is the finale at midnight, Russia vs Slovakia. The Slovaks had trouble last night against the Czechs and the Russians are way better. How is it all the best Slovak players are scorers yet they can never score? Russia win 6-2.

Thoughts? I'm 6-0 so far this tournament, let's hope it continues.

Olympic Hockey Wrap Up Day II

Day 2 is in the books, with no real surprises, though the Czech-Slovakia game was a fairly hard fought one. It allowed me to run my record to 6-0 so far, with one exact score predicted, plus calling Ruutu with a goal in the same game. All in all not too shabby.

Thoughts from the games:

-Awesome to see Forsberg back, he was always one of my all time favorites, hopefully he makes it back to the NHL for the playoffs, especially in a Sens uniform. #21 is free, just sayin...

-Also good to see Jagr back and playing so well, all world talent still

-Kuba still sucks, first goal was his fault for being lazy

-Weird seeing Alfie on the 3rd line, even if it is with Erickson and Backstrom

-Loved seeing Ruutu score on a beauty tip AND having the presence to go collect the puck as a souvenir. Vintage Ruutu.

-The crowds continue to be awesome, wish I was there.

-Michalek was fairly invisible

-I'm still trying to get used to different numbers for certain players

-Awesome seeing Plekanec score on teammate Halak

Olympic Hockey Day 2 Previews & Predicitions

Welcome to day 2 of Olympic hockey, where there is another triple header to keep you entertained all day long. There are 4 Senators in action today, Jarkko Ruutu with Finland, Alfie with Sweden and Kuba and Michalek with the Czechs.

The first game is at 3pm eastern and is Finland vs Belarus. Should be a pretty interesting game but I see Finland winning very handedly in the end, My predicition is Finland 5 and Belarus 1. Ruutu gets a goal.

Next up is the defending Olympic champion Swede's, who take on Germany at 7:30pm. Oddly enough, the undermanned Germans didn't even select former Sen Christoph Schubert to their roster, Ouch! This should be an easy win, Swedes's win easily 6-1. Alfie gets 2 points.

And the finale is Czech Republic taking on Slovakia at Midnight. Word is Marian Gaborik is out for the Slovaks which is bad news. Should be a fiesty affair given their history, but the Czechs are the superior team. Czechs win 4-2. Michalek gets a goal.

So those are the predicitions for Day 2, thoughts?

It's Just Me Against The World

The title is of course an ode to the Tupac Shakur song by the same name, which is appropriate thanks to this video. It's another funny edition from Bloge Salming and Down Goes Brown. Yes they're Leafs fans, but don't hold that against them........this time.

It's a very happy welcome from Team Canada to the rest of the teams in this years Olympics, with a familiar beat. Yes, that is their version of Hit Em Up by 2pac, a song that was aimed at the Notorious BIG and that ignited the East Coast/ West Coast feud and left both of them dead.

Let's hope things end a little more peacefully this time, and with a gold medal. Really well done, minus the Alfie shot of course, It's all good, we know you're just jealous. We'll send ya a postcard from the Playoffs.

Olympic Hockey Wrap Up: Day I

Day one of Olympic hockey is in the books and what a pleasure it is to watch, and that's with none of the games even being good yet. Contenders, Russia, Canada and the United States were all in action, and all won.

Thoughts from Day 1:

-I wish this happened more then once every 4 years, it's so fun to watch

-Great atmosphere. Country vs Country is always awesome

-I wish they were playing on international ice

-I have very mixed feelings trying to cheer for Dany Heatley

-Norway had sweet old style uni's

-It's weird trying to get used to all the different numbers the players are wearing compared to their NHL ones.

-Why is Radulov allowed to wear bright green gloves when their uni is bright red?

-Getzlaf is my favorite Canadian player for those of you who have been asking, then Nash.

-Still not a fan of our new jerseys, i hate that the IOC made us switch our logo

-Only on Team Canada would Iginla and Toews start off the game on the 4th line. Nice hatty Jarome

All in all it was a good first day and I got to watch 3 games. Up tomorrow is more action and it will feature more of our Sens players. I was pretty close in my predictions and I am now 3-0 for the tourney. Don't worry, it won't last long I'm sure.

Olympic Hockey Begins Today

Wait no more, as the most anticipated tournament in years begins today in Vancouver. I know I'm excited and plan to watch practically every game I can. There's a triple header to get everyone started today.

It kicks off with the United States vs Switzerland in group A action at 3pm eastern, then the big one of Canada vs Norway at 7:30pm and then Russia vs Latvia at Midnight.

The last game features 2 Sens players with Anton Volchenkov playing for Russia and Kaspars Dauvagins for Latvia.

Great day of hockey ahead. Come back and comment all day, as we all watch the games together.

I'm calling the US winning a tough one 4-3, Canada winning 7-2 and Russia winning 7-1.

So everyone enjoy the day and do something fun. I'm gonna get ready to audition to be on the Sens for next year in training camp by praticing on the canal ice. $20 says I'm still faster than Jonathan Cheechoo ;)

At Least You're Not THIS Guy

I know many people stress about Valentine's day, but mine was great. The Sens won and as we head into the Olympic break, we're in 3rd in the East and 1st in our division. All in all, it was a pretty decent day.

But I know many of you have trouble on February 14th, it often causes fights with couples and sometimes leads to break ups. Mosty due to unrealistic expectations. I'm sure most people have a horror story or two from Valentine's Day but you've never had something like the above video happen to you.

This is why you don't propose in a public place. Not only are you turned down, which is bad enough, but now millions will see it thanks to youtube and the internet. My heart goes out to ya brother.

Comeback Kids

The Sens played poorly early, but rallied to score 3 in the third, to win 4-3 and go into the Olympic break with the win. They are now back in the division lead going into the break.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't see this game so I don't really know what happened or how anyone played, but a win is a win, so I'll take it.

I was also right calling 3 of the 4 goal scorers today. By the way is Spezza on fire or what? The guy just keeps scoring at an amazing pace. He's on fire.

So for those of you who did see the game, any thoughts?

Don't worry, I will still be having Sens content and Olympic hockey content throughout the break, so still comeback everyday to read the latest on Sens Town.

GDP #63: Sens @ Long Island

The Sens are back it tonight at 5pm, as they play their final game before the Olympic break against the New York Islanders in Long Island. Expect about 12 fans there, as per usual, especially considering it's Valentine's Day.

The Senators will hope to redeem themselves and go into the break on a strong note, after a pretty awful game last night in The D. Brian Elliott will be given the start, although I though Snoopy might have gotten it but oh well, c'est la vie.

The game is not on TV, which sucks since it's the last time we will see the Sens for awhile.

Prediction: Sens comeback and get the win going into the break. Sens win 5-2. Cullen gets his first as a Sen, as well as Spezza, Kovalev, Ruutu and Michalek.

GDP #62: Sens @ Detroit

The new look Sens are back at it tonight, as they have a rare matchup with the Detroit Red Wings at 7pm. If the Sens look lighter today, it's because they were able to shed some dead weight that had been slowly them down. Gone are Alexandre Picard and Jonathan Cheechoo and I think I speak for most Sens fans when I say, awesome, what took ya so long?

With that in mind, this is a big game. It will be the debut of new Sen Matt Cullen, who will rock the #7 jersey after being acquired in a trade yesterday. He will most likely start of centreing the 3rd line and getting some PK and PP time. I'm excited to see what the vet has got, hopefully he was a nice addition to the squad.

The other news for the Sens were the callups of Derek Smith and Brian Lee (finally) to fill the vacancies left by Picard and the injury to Chris Campoli, who's reportedly out a month. I'm excited to see what Lee can do, as I thought he should have been here all year personally. Let's hope he plays well and sticks with the team, he could be a real asset.

It is unclear at this point at who will start in net for the Sens, but I see Brian Elliott getting the nod again today, and Pascal Leclaire getting the call for tomorrow in Long Island. I think Elliott has earned it.

Prediction: The Red Wings are sleeping giants, so I hope we don't wake them. Despite them only being in the hunt for a playoff spot at the moment, we definitely cannot take them lightly, as they still have a ton of talent and playoff experience, as evidence by the 8 players they're sending to the Olympics. We need to get on them early and often. Sens Win 4-2 and Cullen gets 2 points.

Jersey Foul 55

With his departure from the team yesterday, figured it was as good a time as any to feature a foul with Cheechoo involved. Spotted this one at the Vancouver game last week, these two fans sitting right near the ice btw, decided to customize their jerseys ala Buffalo Sabres, with the numbers on the front as well.

Why anyone would want to advertise more that they have a Cheechoo jersey is beyond me, but to each their own. Also a Neil version of course sitting next to him as well. I would like to say it was nice having you hear Jonathan but, I don't want to be a liar.

Good luck wherever you end up.

Cheechoo Put On Waivers

Somebody pinch me, am I dreaming? First Picard is moved, now Cheechoo is off the team. If we pick up a nice defenceman today, I will lose it. I couldn't be happier at today's developments so far and it's only noon.

According to Bruce Garrioch's twitter, the Sens have placed Jonathan Cheechoo oon waivers. If he isn't claimed by noon tomorrow, he will most likely be sent down to Bingo.

This shows Euge and BM must think we're really cup contenders this year to make such a move and eat his salary if he isn't picked up, which is more then likely. It now appears his last 2 games of 1st line time was clearly a last ditch attempt to showcase him and find a taker.

Amazing work Bryan, keep it up and get me that defenceman we need so badly. Tough luck for Cheechoo, hopefully he gets picked up somewhere and has a good career.

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead

TGIF!

What a great day to start my weekend, as my most hated Senator is traded away this morning. That's right, Alexandre Picard, who was bloody awful last night btw, as per usual, was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes along with a 2010 2nd round pick in return for veteran centre Matt Cullen.

Cullen, who is 33, has 12 goals and 28 assists, good for 40 points in 60 games on an awful Carolina team. He brings some added secondary scoring for us and can play the point on our powerplay as well.

Why is it we often trade with Carolina?

Anyways, I think it's a decent deal considering it didn't cost us too much. Picard was dead weight and only playing because Karlsson was injured so no loss there and a 2nd is fine to give up since we have two 2nd rounders this year. Nice move BM.

The only question I have is do we need another centre? By my count we already have Spezza, Fisher, Regin and Kelly as centreman, but you can always use another faceoff man I guess.

Now we are left one defenceman short until Karlsson returns. Derek Smith has been called up from Bingo to play, but let's be honest, he isn't the solution. So does BM have another move up his sleeve? I still think we need another defenceman more then the forward we acquired.

With the addition of Cullen, where does that leave Cheechoo? I don't see any room for him with Cullen and Foligno coming back in a few weeks. Or does Triple C sit someone else? We shall see what happens I guess.

At least I can celebrate the departure of Picard and the addition of some scoring. Seems we're making a cup run, ain't nothing wrong with that.

New Contract For BM the GM

The Senators announced today that GM Bryan Murray has been given a one year contract extension by the club. Kinda makes no sense to me by extending him only one year, but then I suppose it leaves up options should it not go well. I think he's done a pretty good job as head honcho though, so I can't really complain. Congratulations Bryan.

PS-Also reported today that Anton Volchenkov will NOT be traded according to Murray and that they've made a contract offer to the Russian.

Roster Freeze Today @ 3pm - Who Stays And Who Goes?

So the Olympic roster freeze begins later today at 3pm eastern time and ends on february 28th, just a few days before the March 3rd trade deadline. So with just over 12 hours and counting to the deadline, was last night the last time we may have seen some Sens in an Ottawa uni?

You can never be sure and everyone is tradeable, EVERYONE, if the right offer comes in. Most GM's want to get deals done sooner then later and most experts agree today will be a very busy day and that the actual trade deadline might be quieter.

Bryan Murray has repeatedly said he wants to add another scorer to the lineup, while I'd rather add another defenceman to qb our pp.

So with that in mind, who would you like to see here? Who would you be sad to lose if a trade is made?

The most likely Sens to be traded are Picard, Campoli, Brian Lee, Ryan Shannon and Jonathan Cheechoo, plus there could always be picks involved as well.

Possible additions could be Thomas Kaberle (I'm dreaming I know), Alex Ponikarovsky, Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen, Nathan Horton, Pavel Kubina and who knows who else. Usually it's someone who comes out of left field and there's a new name added to possibilities everyday. And there there's the ridiculous rumors, like we are interested in Vinny Lecavalier or Scott Niedermayer type names. I just don't see it. We need a tinker, not a retool and the price for those guys is too much, let alone the cap hit.

So get ready for a very busy day possibly. What will happen is anyone's guess and Ottawa usually remains quite quiet but this is a year where we have a good shot the way we've been playing. Perhaps Murray and Melnyk have decided it's time to take a chance and go all in. Only time will tell what happens.

It's Better On Top

With last night's win over Washington, combined with Buffalo's OT loss to the lowly Carolina Hurricanes, the Sens are now on top of the Northeast Division. Just a few weeks ago it seemed impossible to catch the Slugs but now we've passed them. Sounds like another classic Buffalo choke job. Go Sens Go!!

Six Double Oh

Shoutout to Mike Fisher, who last night against the Caps, played in his 600th career NHL game, all with the Ottawa Senators. Congratulations on the milestone #12. In a nod to Office Space, do you think Fisher will be showing Carrie his Six Double Oh Face?

Capital Gains

What a crazy game that was, as it seems to be whenever the Capitals lace em up. There is definitely not a more exciting team in the NHL then Washington. It was an exciting game and great to give the Caps a 2nd straight loss after that amazing 14 game win streak they had going. Was it just me or was this just really poor goaltending tonight? I mean at least 6 or 7 of those combined 11 goals were pretty iffy. It will be both of our teams' achilles heel if either of us stumble in the playoffs. With the win the Sens now have taken over the division lead from Buffalo, take that Sabre fan. If there are any.

Thoughts from the game:

-Was it me or was Picard on the ice for every Caps goal tonight, or did it just seem that way? Him and Cheechoo of course were both a minus 2 on the evening.

-Caps goalie situation is really not looking good.

-Phillips and A-Train had great games.

-Good to see Kovalev get the game winner, he has the most points of any Sen the 2nd half of the year, don't hate

-Good to see a sellout finally

The Sens played a nice game and if it wasn't for the shaky play of Brian Elliott, would have won a lot easier then they did, but hard to complain when we just knocked off one of the elite team's in the NHL. The Sens have started a new streak, at 2 wins in a row. More tomorrow, enjoy the win tonight.

Gdp #61: Senators V Capitals

It's a battle of super hot teams tonight, as the Sens take on the Washington Capitals at SBP. The Sens have won 12 of 13 and Washington has won 14 of 15, so you know it's two elite teams playing tonight, should be a good one.

Of course when playing the Caps, the focus is on Ovechkin and rightfully so. By the way, some of you might be wondering what the picture is of today, well it's Ovie's sick ride, completely blacked out, but that's not what's good about it. Look closer (click to enlarge photo) and check out his license plate. It reads AO GR8, how dope is that? I love someone embracing his station in life. I love Ovie. Shoutout to the DMV area by the way. That's DC, Maryland and Virgina for those of you who don't know.

Having said that (LD), Washington is more then a one trick pony. Focus too much on Ovechkin and Semin or Bakcstrom or Green can easily burn you as well. They have been outscoring teams easily this year, averaging close to 5 goals a game which is insane. They're one problem is in between the pipes, where it's average at best, which as well know all to well in Ottawa can be a team's downfall.

For the Sens, they look to extend their win streak to a modest 2, but beating the Caps would be a major accomplishment. They are the best team in the East by a mile, so would be a great measuring stick win to see where exactly we're at. There are no lineup changes expected. Brian Elliott starts in net again.

The weird line combo's are a bit weird, at least to start, check em':

Michalek-Spezza-Cheechoo
Kelly-Fisher-Alfredsson
Shannon-Regin-Kovalev
Ruutu-Winchester-Neil

Predicition: This is a tough one to call. The Caps played and lost last night in Montreal, so they will be a bit tired but I don't know if I can see them dropping 2 in a row, then again, we're equally as hot. In the end, I think it will an entertaining game but Sens lose 5-3.

20 For 30

Shoutout to Brian Elliott, who last night got his 20th win of the season, a new career high. He was key to our 11 game win streak, winning 9 in a row and often played spectacularly. He has now won 10 of his past 11 starts, not too shabby. During the streak, he was named 1st and 2nd NHL star of the week in consecutive weeks. Congratulations to Brian on the milestone.

Sens Own Canada

I doubt many of you noticed, in fact I'm pretty sure no one did, since it wasn't reported anywhere in the media as far as I can tell, hell I barely figured it out, but with last night's win, we have now beaten every Canadian team. Good enough reason for me to call us Canada's best team.

We beat Calgary last night 3-2, Vancouver last Thursday 3-1, on November 10th we beat the Oil 4-3, we've beaten the Leafs twice, on October 6th and November 17th and Montreal three times, on October 17th, December 28th and January 30th.

Just an interesting little fact I came across that I thought I'd share. Always good to accomplish new things, plus I'm tired of lesser Canadian teams getting all the attention when they're garbage, you know who I mean.

Cinq Sans Pour Cheechoo

Shoutout to Jonathan Cheechoo, who last night played in his 500th career NHL game. He celebrated by assisting on the game winning goal and being named 1st star of the game. I know I've been tough on him but I was happy to see him play well last night, no hard feelings. Hopefully this will help him turn it around and get his game back on the tracks so to speak, get it? Congratulations on the milestone from Sens Town.

Calgary Flames? More Like Calgary Lames

What a slow start, reminded me of the Toronto game for a second, but we managed to pull through and fight back and got the all important W, which is really all that matters in the end. Snappy headline aside, it was a good win in a bounce back type of game for us. If we lost this, it would be 2 in a row and with Washington coming in on Thursday and a game at Joe Louis on Saturday, it could have been a losing streak as we entered the break. Thankfully, a new winning streak was started instead.

Thoughts from the game:

-Did Cheechoo read my article? He sure was motivated tonight in his 500th career game, even getting 1st line minutes for awhile. He came through, setting up the winner from Spezza, even if the pass was lucky to get to him, he's gotta take what he can get right? Never mind that he shoulda had a hatty. Our standards are so low we praise him for almost getting it done now, even giving him the 1st star because of a lucky assist.

-I thought the Western Conference was supposed to be so tough? I haven't been that impressed so far. Calgary is overrated.

-Too bad former Sen Brian McGrattan was a healthy scratch tonight, was looking forward to welcoming him back.

-Elliott was solid, neither goal was his fault.

-Nice shot by Ruutu, he has some skill in em

-No 50/50 again in the 2nd intermission for the 2nd straight game that I specifically looked for it.

-Still no sellout, what more do they have to do?

-New PA announcer was terrible and behind on everything all night

-Good to see we were disciplined tonight

-Picard is back to sucking, no surprise

So that's it, we have now beaten every Canadian team this year, the Canuck cycle if you will. With the win, we are now tied with Buffalo for the division lead, so look out. Big game on Thursday against the insanely hot Washington Capitals.

GDP #60: Sens V Flames

The Sens are back at it tonight, trying to start a new win streak, as they take on our fellow Canadian squad, the Calgary Flames. The Flames have been struggling as of late, hence the departures of Dion Phaneuf and Olli Jokinen last week. In return, they got a mix back of average level talent, so if at time you think you're watching the Maple Leafs, don't check you eyes, the Flames now have many of them in their lineup.

This is a rare game between the 2 Canadian clubs and features the best 2 captains in the NHL, in Daniel Alfredsson and Jarome Iginla. Poor Iggy, always stuck playing with no one his whole career. The Flames also have Jay Bouwmeester, Robin Reger and one of the league's best goalies in Miikka Kiprusoff, so it should be a good challenge for us.

On the Sens tip, no lineup changes from the masscare that was Saturday night, so let's just hope it was an exception and we get back on track tonight. Jonathan Cheechoo will be playing in his 500th career game tonight, hopefully he scores but doubtful. After some speculation, Brian Elliott wil get the start again. I think that's the right call, he's earned another start.

With the win tonight and a Sabres loss to the Bruins, we can take over the lead in the division, so it's a big game for us in many ways. Picard remains in the lineup, with Karlsson unready to return yet.

Prediction: The Sens need this win to get back on track, as we don't want to start a losing streak. After our last game, we need a big showing to get us the 2 points and possibly take the division lead and put the pressure on the Sabres. The Flames are a team in turmoil and a bit of an enigma, so you don't know what team you're going to get exactly. I say the Sens get it back on track and win 4-1.

Cheechoo Train Derailed

To say that Jonathan Cheechoo has been living on borrowed time is a gross understatement. By all accounts, he is a great guy. He works hard, does what he's told and no one has a bad word to say about the guy. But this isn't little league, where just doing your best is good enough and you always get a trophy. This is the pro's and all that matters are results, and let's be real, he hasn't been getting it done for a long time.

In just his 2nd NHL season, he had a very unexpected 28 goals with San Jose and many were surprised. Could he do it again? Yep. The next season he lead the NHL in goals, with an unimaginable 56, playing alongside Joe Thornton, but San Jose wasn't fooled. Even after that amazing season, he was only signed to a contract of 3 million a year, hardly a fair deal for a 56 goal scorer. They knew what everyone else didn't, that he was getting lucky and his speed was a huge problem.

After that 56 goal year, the pressure was on, as people now expected big things from the Moose Factory native. He defied critics though, and posted a very respectable 37 goals in 2006-07. But that was the beginning of the end for Cheechoo. The next year he only scored 23 and last season was down to a measly 12 on a high scoring Sharks squad. The magic was gone and he was dead weight.

Imagine Doug Wilson's smile when he realized he would be able to dump Cheechoo's contract in the Heatley deal. So I'm gonna get ths best player, dump a horrible contract on you, no first round pick and all I really have to give up is a top six forward who has potential, but is completely expendable? Come on Bryan, what's the catch? You don't really expect me to believe you will take Jonathan Cheechoo do you? When Murray said yes, how long do you think it took Doug Wilson to say yes. A milli second? Wait, what's faster then a milli second?

All of us here in Ottawa all talked ourselves into him though the minute he became a Senator. I know I tried to. Oh he just needs a change of scenery, you don't score 56 by sheer luck right? I stand corrected, because as far as I can tell, apparently you can. Then I started bargaining with myself. Well 56 is asking too much, but he could maybe score 30 playing with Spezza right? How wrong we all were. Who knew we'd be all be longing for Patrick Marleau months later.

The NHL season is a long one and injuries are a large part of it. You almost certainly expect most guys to miss a few games. There are only 5 guys on this years Senators team that haven't missed one yet. The lucky 5 are Matt Carkner, Chris Kelly, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Phillips and yep you guessed it, Jonathan Cheechoo. So injuries aren't the problem, his play is. I was all for giving him a chance when he got here and I think Sens Army and the Sens coaching staff have given him every opportunity in the world to get it going, but he hasn't. Our patience is wearing thin.

He's played on the 1st line with elite talent and that didn't work. He's played on the 2nd line, where maybe he could be a secondary scorer, nope! He played on the 3rd line with no success either. He now finds himself on the 4th line, averaging less ice time then any other regular Senator, with a miniscule 5 goals in 59 games played. It's a pretty big fall for a guy who just 4 seasons ago won the Rocket Richard trophy. No wait, that isn't right. A pretty big fall doesn't do it justice, the fall from grace is unbelievable.

The truly sad part is he doesn't even deserve to be on the 4th line. He deserves to be in the AHL, or quite frankly, out of hockey, as he has plateaued and would be taking up a roster spot of someone who has big league potential, like Zack Smith. How is it that Nick Foligno has been a healthy scratch this year but Cheechoo hasn't? Or even Shean Donovan for that matter? At least Chum brings a phsycial presence and speed to the rink each night. Cheechoo does neither.

As one of my favorite rappers Jay Z says, men lie, women lie, numbers don't. Sorry Jonathan but the numbers don't lie. Cheechoo has 5 goals and 8 assists this season, good for 13 points in 59 games and is a minus 11 on the season, which doesn't sound nearly as bad as it is until you have someone to compare it to. Let's look at our least offensively talented player on our team, Anton Volchenkov. The A-Train, who can barely hit the net with a shot, or who stickhandles with the grace of a cerebal palsy patient, has 3 goals and 9 assists, good for 12 points and is a plus 8, all in only 44 games, while playing against all the top lines in the league every night. Yep you read that right, Cheechoo has ONE more point the Anton Volchenkov in FIFTEEN more games.

The thing no one can figure out, is why he hasn't been watching from the press box, not even once this season. We all want to root for the guy, but name me one thing he brings to the table? He's unbelievably slow, as in he makes Carkner look fast. He isn't an enforcer or a physical player, who could at least set the tempo with a big hit. He can't score anymore, and as we've all seen, even if he has a great scoring chance, he finds some new weird way to not score. You can tell the guy is run down and has lost his confidence by his body language and his failure to complete even the simplest of plays, like dumping the puck in the opposing teams zone without it hitting an opponents player or fanning on the shot. It's honestly sad to watch.

Bryan Murray and Coach Cory Clouston are the Kings of preaching accountability, so why is he still playing? Would it be much better for our team with a player like Zack Smith in the lineup? A young, hungry player, who has speed, hits, has a scoring touch if given the chance and is willing to do whatever is he told to do. The answer is an easy yes.

With Nick Foligno being banged up, Cheechoo may have bought himself a few more weeks, but when Foligno does come back, there is no way there is a roster spot for him, and that's with Zack Smith remaining in Binghamton. That's also assuming we don't make a move for a top 6 forward before the Olympic roster freeze on Friday or the NHL trade deadline on March 3rd, as Bryan Murray has hinted heavily at doing.

I know it might not be a popular move around the NHL to send him to the minors, being such a good guy and all, but in a league where cap space is as valuable as can be, it's a necessity, and being nice doesn't get you any W's in April, May or June. Optioning him down to Bingo, would free up the much needed cap space to bring on another player for the cup run, and fresh off an 11 game win streak, Melnyk and Murray have to be feeling we have a decent shot at Lord Stanley this season. It's the only move to make.

That's the thing about living on borrowed time, you never really know how much you have left, until you have none at all.

Carrie @ the Super Bowl

Congratulations goes out to the New Orleans Saints for winning the Super Bowl tonight, beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. I was happy to see NOLA beat up on the Colts because their fan base is awesome and I cant's stand Peyton Manning, as I'm an old school Pats fan.

Of course, Sens were reppin at the Super Bowl in Miami as well, with Carrie Underwood, sans Fisher (who was busy winning the Sens' hardest shot competition), singing the National Anthem prior to the game. In case you missed it, here it is.

Super Bowl Sunday Links

It's been quite awhile since I've done the links and I apologize for it. So in honor of our 11 game win streak that is no more and Superbowl Sunday, I present the first edition of the links for 2010, enjoy!

-I know most of you know a lot about most of these guys by now, but just in case you wanted to know what car they drive or what their favorite movies are, here's getting to know Chris Phillips and Peter Regin and Chris Neil and Chris Campoli and Mike Fisher and finally Erik Karlsson.

-Remember that weird fire here involving the burning of the Minnesota Wild's equipment? Well their goalie Josh Harding decided to honor the incident and the Ottawa Fire Department on his new mask, pretty cool!

-We all love the A-train in Ottawa, but it seems we aren't the only ones who notice his stellar play around the NHL. The Hockey News has him in their top 10 pending UFA's

-Check out Carrie Underwood's crazy expensive ring, valued to be around 150 g's.....I wonder how many orpahns that would feed? Just sayin...

-Always funny to see an embarassing story about a rival player, even if he should win MVP

-Was never a fan of Mario but the guy did some amazing work as of late for an Ottawa boy

-Interview time on the Fan 590 with Chris Campoli and Nick Foligno and Bryan Murray and finally Jason Spezza

-Check it out, my east coast and west cost teams were both killin it

-Very proud of Jason Spezza when I saw this

-Robin Lehner might just be our star goalie of the future, as he was named CHL's tender of the week for the 2nd time this season

-Cheer FOR the Leafs? Mendes thinks we should

-Well done for 1 nights work

-Only way the Cup will be awarded to Toronto

-The Globe and Mail tells us something we all already knew

-I dunno if I agree with this but still he's been better this year for sure

-Clearly Sens fans have no clue what things are worth

Thoughts on the links?

I'm hoping New Orleans wins since I hate Manning in case you're wondering.

Sens Skills Today

Seems ironic that the annual Sens Skill competition comes after a game in which they showed none, but in any event, it's a good time for a good cause. Then event takes place at 1pm today at SBP and features 2 teams competing in events like the breakaway challenge, fastest skater and hardest shot.

Team Black is: Alfie, Carkner, Cheechoo, Elliott, Kelly, Michalek, Neil, Regin, Ruutu and Volchenkov

Team Red is: Phillips, Campoli, Donovan, Fisher, Kovalev, Kuba, Leclaire, Picard, Shannon, Spezza and Winchester.

Should be a fun, family type atmosphere and should be an enjoyable time. If you get a chance to make it out, I suggest you do. Part of the proceeds go to chairty as well, so it's for a good cause. Tickets range from $10 to $17.50.

UPDATE @ 4:35pm: Team Red won the skills competition, with Ryan Shannon winning fastest skater and Mike Fisher winning hardest shot.

Shutout & Embarassed

The win streak is over!

Spezza's streak is over!

Elliott's streak is definitely over!

What a pathetic showing by the team, truly embarassing to watch. It wasn't that we just lost to the 2nd worst team in the NHL, though that is certainly bad, it was that we were completely and utterly dominated in every way possible. It looked like we didn't even care.

They outworked us and frankly, they deserved the win. Brian Elliott reverted back to his soft letting in goal self, the team reverted back to taking numerous stupid penalties and all of a sudden we couldn't even make a pass, let alone get a decent scoring chance. Did Giguere even make one good save? I can't remember one.

All streaks have to end and I knew it wouldn't go on forever, but we could have at least gone down fighting, instead of rolling over.

Thoughts from the game:

-Good to see Picard waited all of 4 mins into his return to take a stupid penalty that cost us a goal. I imagine his days are numbered

-Everyone played poorly, everyone!

-Carkner got dropped like a bad habit by Orr

-Toronto fans being loud, who knew? A little too cocky with the hey hey hey goodbye though. You're in 2nd last place in the league. Have another fun offseason of plenty of golf.

-You know you played a bad game when Luke Schenn scored 2 on ya.

-What is it about the ACC and the Leafs that equal awful bad angle goals against our goalies?

So there you have it, an embarassing affair I'd like to pretend never happened. Shutout by the 2nd worse team in the league really? And not just shutout but giving up 5 as well. The only upside perhaps is now Murray will not stand put and get us another scorer at the deadline. And oh ya, Cheechoo needs to be sent to the AHL now, it's embrassing and taking up a roster spot from someone who deserves it.

Thoughts on tonights "game"?

GDP #59: Battle Of Ontario-Sens @ Tdot

First off, I'd like to send out my condolences to Brian Burke on his son's tragic accident last night. I know Burkie can be a jerk or a loud mouth most of the time, but this is more important then hockey and I'm sure he is distraught as can be, so all the best goes out to you and your family on this awful day.

R.I.P. Brendan Burke.

Now on to the big game, as the Sens take on the hated Toronto Maple Leafs at the ACC, trying to extend their win streak to 12. With their season going nowhere and fast, the TML's would sure love to break our amazing streak and will still be riding a high of the new acquisitions from last week. They haven't named their starting goalie yet, but since he didn't play last night, I would imagine JS Giguere gets the call, while we counter with Brian Elliott of course.

No lineup changes for the Sens, other then Alexandre Picard drawing back into the team because of the Erik Karlsson injury. Of course Nick Foligno is still out for a few weeks, but Shean Donovan still sits, even though we all know it really should be Cheechoo, that situation is getting embarassing.

Prediction: On paper, with the leafs sitting in 2nd last place in the NHL, this should be an easy win to keep the streak going. But as well know, no such thing when playing your main rival, as they will come out hard to beat us and will want to win it for Burke. The Sens are the way better team but you never know what will happen when these two teams get together. Having said that (shoutout to Larry David), I said I wouldn't bet against the Sens until they lost, Sens win 5-2.

Don't Look Now But....

.........with a win tomorrow against Toronto in the Battle of Ontario, which would be our 12th in a row, we could move into first place in our division, surpassing the Buffalo Sabres. With a win and a Sabres loss, we would then have 72 points, to their 71, though they would have 2 games in hand, but still an amazing feat considering the way it looked a few weeks ago. Not that they need extra motivation to ever beat Toronto or anything, but this sure would be a nice reward for all their hard work over the win streak. Buffalo takes on Columbus tomorrow night too, so keep your eyes on the scoreboard.
