The Season Is Over And We're Starving For Any News Links

The 2010-11 Sens, or at least what's left of them, salute the fans after the final game vs Montreal
The season has been over for almost 3 weeks now, the draft/free agency is still almost 2 months away, and we've just come off arguably the best first round of the playoffs of all time. The problem is there has been precious little Senators news, and I know many of you need your medicine, so I figured it's a good time for another edition of the links. Enjoy.

Binghamton Win Again, Head Home With 2-0 Lead

The B-Sens came back yet again, beating Portland 5-3 and taking a 2-0 series lead. Let's just hope they don't pull a Montreal Canadiens on us. Latvian born Kaspars Daugavins added a pair, while Bobby Ryamond, Zack Smith and Bobby Butler rounded out the scoring in the win. Robin Lehner made 43 saves for the victory. B-Sens Take Game 1 In Portland.....In Regulation

Here are your highlights for game 1 of the B-Sens second round series win over Portland. Goals were scored by captain Ryan Keller, Bobby Butler and Zack Smith in the 3-2 win. Seems odd to win in regulation doesn't it? If you want a more in depth post game wrap up click here to read what Sens Town buddy Joy Lindsay had to say and follow her on twitter.

Photo Diary: Gatineau Olympiques Playoff Game

So with the Sens out of the playoffs, I fully admit that I was missing seeing hockey live. With training camp still months away, I figured I'd make the trip over the border and take in some QMJHL playoff action, as the Gatineau Olympiques took on the Quebec Ramparts and Patrick Roy. Of course as always, I documented it for your reading pleasure. I don't go to Jr hockey very much, but maybe I should start more. It's always a good time and you can't beat seats that close for only $16. So with my duckets in hand, on to la belle province I went.

Anderson's Gear

With the strong play of several of our youngsters down the stretch, coupled with a few decent prospects in the pipeline and a top 6 draft pick in June, many are excited about next season's potential. Well realistically,  if we are to go anywhere next year, the key ingredient will be goalie Craig Anderson, who was pretty incredible in his short stint with the Senators after being acquired in the Brian Elliott trade. Well I have previously shown you his new mask, so now it's time to see what pads and other equipment he wears. To see what he rocks click here.

I Got My Wish, Sort Of

In a January rant, I lamented the fact that no Ottawa Senators player had joined the Twitter-verse. Well today I got my wish, sort of. You see it was a player we're all very familiar with around here, albeit a former Senator. Yesterday was the day Mike Fisher decided to join Twitter. His first tweet was of course Jesus relate, which means he will be a boring tweeter for the most part given his personality. This will satisfy all of the loyal Ottawa, I mean Nashville fans of his, I mean his wife. If you want to follow him click here.

Of course after less than 2 days and only 3 boring tweets so far, he already has 5,000 followers. Thoughts on Fisher joining?

The Countdown Is On

Via the Sens Store - here's the countdown to training camp. So don't worry Sens fans, hockey will be back before you know it. So mark the date on your calendar and get excited for an exciting offseason filled with potential draft picks and potential free agent signings.

Silfverberg & Rundblad Named To Three Crowns

Two Sens prospects who have never played in the NHL, have been named to Sweden's entry for the upcoming World Championship. That's a pretty impressive feat if you ask me. The expected player named, is of course defenceman David Rundblad, who should be suiting up for Ottawa next season. The surprise addition is forward Jakob Silfverberg, who had a strong season and opened up some eyes to get on the team. The future is looking better and better for the Sens isn't it? You also have to think that Erik Karlsson would have been on the squad had he not been injured late in the season.

To Catch A Predator

Some of Smashville's finest hockey fans
Luckily for you all, I'm not talking about the NBC show. Were some of you worried? But what I am talking about now,is that thanks to the Nashville Predators series win yesterday, the Senators now have a 3rd round pick in 2012, and if the Preds happen to win another round, it becomes a 2nd in 2012 via the Mike Fisher trade. Things in Nashville are getting a bit nuts about getting out of round 1 aren't they? It's almost Montreal-esque. I suppose that's what happens when it takes you 12 seasons to win a series. Hilarious celebratory video after the jump.

Spezza Gets Eh, I Mean "A" For Canada

It more good news, Jason Spezza has been named an alternate captain for Team Canada at the upcoming World Championship in Slovakia, which runs April 29th-May 15th. Nice to see Giggles being rewarded for his strong play lately. Congratulations on the honor.

7th Heaven

Insane is the word to describe the Sens 6-5 overtime in game 7 last night. Here is the series winner, courtesy of Ryan Potulny. The BSens win the Series 4-3 and are the 16th team in AHL history to come back from a 3-1 series deficit. Potulny in addition to the OT winner, had himself a 5 point night, and now leads the AHL playoffs in scoring. Unbelievable!

Even more incredible, the BSens become only the 2nd team in AHL history to win all 4 games of a series in overtime. They will now take on the Portland Pirates in round 2.

Will Binghamton make it to 4 too? Find out later today at 7pm as they play game 7 vs Manchester.

B-Sens Win In OT Again, Force Game 7

The Binghamton Senators live to fight another day, beating Manchester in overtime yet again, this time 2-1, forcing a game 7. The hero tonight was Geoff Kinrade, who scored the season saving goal at 10:01 of the 2nd extra period.

Definitely not to be forgotten is Robin Lehner, who set a Bingo record with 51 saves in the win against Manchester. Game 7 is Saturday night at 7pm in Manchester, New Hampshire. Good luck boys, make us proud.

Jersey Foul 85

This was a bit of a weird one, even by jersey foul standards. First off, there's 2 of them, home and away, which is unusual, but 2nd, was this an ode to Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks? The league's only 50 goal scorer also happens to wear #10 in the OC. If it's any consolation, Perry was drafted by none other than Bryan Murray.

If you have a jersey foul you think is worth seeing, you can submit it to Sens Town by emailing me at

B-Sens Keep Season Alive In Extra Time

The Binghamton Senators extend their season, winning game 5 against Manchester 5-4 in overtime. The hero is the pride of Latvia, Kaspars Daugavins. Game 6 will be in Manchester on Friday night, and should the B-Sens force a game 7, it will be on Saturday night in New Hampshire as well.

B-Sens Doubled Up

The Binghamton Senators are on the verge of losing their 1st round series with Manchester, after losing 6-3 tonight, despite outshooting them 38-26. Binghamton now trail the series 3 games to 1 after losing both games at home so far. Let's see if they can rebound in game 5. If they don't their season is over.

Vote For Bobby

Our own Booby Butler is in the tourney for TSN's play of the year and is battling Edmonton's Jordan Eberle at the moment. As you can see, he isn't doing too well, losing 85% to 15%. Let's help Bobby be a little more respectable shall we. To vote for Butler click here

Fisher Does It Again

It was just a few days ago that former Sen Mike Fisher had an amazing playoff debut for his new club Nashville, and last night, he did it again, scoring the game winner for the Preds late in the third to give them the 4-3 win over another former Sen in Ray Emery.

B-Sens Choke Away 3-0 Lead, Fall 5-4 In OT

The Bingamton Senators blew it tonight, falling 5-4 in overtime in game 3, after being up 3-0 at one point. They now find themselves down 2-1 in the series. Not a very impressive performance. Remember for all of your B-Sens needs, be sure to follow friend of Sens Town Joy Lindsay. She's the beat reporter for the Baby Sens and knows her stuff. Bringing Down Your Property Value Sens Style

It's sping time, well it should be at least despite the horrible weather the last few days, but for most, spring is a time to clean up and improve your household. Looking for something new to spruce up the crib? Don't worry, the NHL's got you. Now you can rock a massive jersey flag of the Sens and bring down your property value and draw the ire of your neigbors at the same time. Is there anything the NHL won't sell out and try and sell to fans? Apparently not.

Binghamton @ Manchester Game 2

The Sens evened their first round series of the Calder Cup playoffs last night at one game apiece, winning a thrilling game in Overtime on a goal from rookie Derek Grant 4mins into the extra frame. The Sens were down 3-0 going into the 3rd, but tied it up quickly after 2 prompt goals from Potulny and Keller, before taking a surprising lead at 3-2 on a goal from Kaspars Daugavins on the powerplay.

Phil Legault Fired

Longtime director of communications for the Sens Phil Leagult has been fired by the Ottawa Senators. No reason has been given at this time but I am working on it. There's nothing official from the Sens yet, but it's a done deal, he has been let go.

Photo Diary: Florida Road Game

Welcome to another edition of Sens Town Photo Diary. This time I take on a time honored tradition, the road trip. I recently was in Florida for the March 30th game vs the Panthers and here are the results. We start off on the way to the arena, riding on Panther Parkway. For some reason it was empty. A sign of things to come I imagined.

Binghamton @ Manchester Game 1

Here are the highlight's from tonight's playoff game of our farm team, the Binghamton Senators. The B-Sens fell 2-1 to the Monarchs and look to rebound for game 2 tomorrow. By the way, I know there was only 40 seconds left when the Sens score and it was 2-0 at the time, but why is the arena basically emtpy? Trying to be that brutal Manchester traffic I suppose, pretty weak.

Of Course He Did

Yep, of course the famously streaky Mike Fisher would have to go out and drop 2 goals and an assist in his first ever playoff game for Nashville. He was the 1st overall star in last night's action according to the Puck Daddy blog and with good reason. Fisher's strong play helped them to a 1-0 series lead in Anaheim against the Ducks. Don't get too excited, we all know he's likely not to score the rest of the playoffs and go on a patented cold streak for 15 games. Still frustrating to see. He had 29 career playoff points for the Sens in 75 games before this.

Shannon Gets Call From Uncle Sam

Ryan Shannon during action for Team USA at 2009 IIHF World Championship
Unrestricted free agent to be Ryan Shannon, was today named to Team USA's 2011 World Championship roster for the upcoming tournament in Slovakia. He also represented his country at the 2009 World's and in the 2003 World Jr's.

Sens Town Meets The King

If you're an OG reader or even a semi new one, you almost certainly know that I have a west coast team. I picked a team awhile ago now, so I had someone to follow later at night and in a different conference, so it wouldn't be a conflict of interest with my first love, the Sens. The LA Kings are that team and they begin their playoff push tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks and Dany Heatley (a reason to cheer for the Kings).

Sens Lose At Losing, Will Pick 6th Overall

The losers roundtable, with BM the GM on the far left
Of course it could only happen the Senators right? We had an 8.1% chance to move up from 5th worst record to the 1st overall pick, but in true Senators fashion, the New Jersey Devils won the draft lottery and moved up from 8th to 4th, knocking us down a spot to 6th overall for June's NHL entry draft in Minnesota.

If we didn't have bad luck, we wouldn't have any at all. Time to start researching all the draft prospects again Sens fans and let's hope for a gem from the 6th spot.

Draft Lottery Tonight

Tonight is the start of the Sens offseason, with the 2011 NHL Draft Lottery taking place at 8pm on TSN. This may not seem like a big deal, but it could be franchise altering. By the end of the show, we will find out where we will be drafting in June.

Photo Diary: Twitterverse's Reaction To Murray's Extension

Bryan Murray contemplating if he should sign Simon Gagne or Alex Tangua this offseason
I had been hearing from people in the know that Bryan Murray would be returning as GM for quite some time. No doubt about it I was told, they'd be shocked it it didn't happen. I was of the same feeling, so once the announcement became official on Friday, I knew the fun of twitter would be coming in fast. So I decided to save some of the best tweets from the interwebs to share for your comedic enjoyment. So fasten your seatbelts.

Rumor Alert: Silfverberg Coming To North America Next Season

Jakob Silfverberg at Sens prospect camp
Now keep in mind this is just speculation at the moment, but it appears there's a solid chance that Swedish Sens prospect Jakob Silfverberg may be heading to North American to play next season according to this article. I've done my best to translate it online and I've posted it after the jump.

Sens Finish Season 26th Overall

The final NHL standings for the 2010-11 season - Ottawa finished in 26th place
With the Sens season wrapping up yesterday, and the league finishing today, it's official, the Sens have finished the 2010-11 year in 26th place overall. Not exactly what we had in mind when we started the year, and not where I was hoping to finish if you wanted to know my opinion.

Cory Clouston.....You're Fired

Former Sens Coach Cory Clouston with GM Bryan Murray in happier times
Possibly the worst secret in hockey was finally fufilled this evening, as Cory Clouston was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Senators. Someone had to be pay and be accountable for this trainwreck of a season, and it wasn't going to be GM Bryan Murray, who has now gone through 3 coaches in 4 seasons with him as GM, hardly a spectacular record, but with a fresh 3 year deal in hand somehow.

Zack Smith vs Nathan Horton

The season may have ended on a sour note this afternoon, but there was a very entertaining fight during the game from Zack Smith and Nathan Horton. This was arguably the most fun fight of the season, so in case you missed it here it is, and if you've already seen in, watch it again.

Thoughts on the tilt?

Sens Lose Finale In Beantown

Well that's it for the 2010-11 Senators season, ending the year with a 3-1 loss to the Bruins this afternoon in Boston. Their were some positives from this game, but as a whole, we looked overmatched for most of the match in my opinion. No shame losing to the B's however, as they're a pretty stacked team posied to make a long playoff run.

Bobby Butler had the lone Sens goal, scoring in front of friends and family, which is nice to see. Perhaps he will have a future with the Sens afterall. He definitely has a nice shot, but needs to work on his skating. Jason Spezza looked good all afternoon again, can't say enough about how well he's played the last quarter of the season. Very impressed with giggles.

GDP #82: Sens @ Boston - The Final Game

Well here we are, the last game of a long season, as the Sens are in Boston to take on the Bruins in an afternoon delight game to wrap up the year at TD Garden. The big news is Cody Bass will be in a Sens uniform for the first time since December 2008.

Saturday, April 09, 2011

Bass Named Man Of The Year

Cody Bass wins Yanick Dupre Award as AHL's 2011 Man Of The Year
Since there has been non stop Sens news as of late, what's one more story right? Well today's news is a very positive one, as Cody Bass has been named the AHL's 2011 Man Of The Year, for all of his philanthropy work this season after the Daron Richardson tragedy. Congratulation goes out to Cody for winning the Yanick Dupre award. As a reward, the Senators have called him up to play this afternoon in Boston for the last game of the year. It will be his first game back in the NHL since 2008.

Congratulations to Cody for all his great work.

Finally......Andre Petersson Has Come Back...To Ottawa

After being drafted nearly 3 years ago, Swedish prospect Andre Petersson has finally signed an ELC to join the Ottawa Senators system officially. He is definitely a guy who plays hard and has some skill, but unfortunately for him, he lacks the size to likely be an impact player in the NHL at 5'9 and 170lbs.

Friday, April 08, 2011

Sens Ink Cannone

Newly signed Sens prospect Pat Cannone celebrating a goal on Miami University
The Senators have reached out and signed another collegiate free agent, inking Miami of Ohio's Pat Cannone to an entry level deal this afternoon. The deal is a bit weird, as it's only for one season, which is quite unusual, but perhaps some flexibiity on both sides. He will be assigned to Binghamton immediately to finish the season out in the AHL.

Locke Wins MVP

Corey Locke in action for Binghamton
In what was already a busy day in Sens Town with the Murray extension, Spezza to Team Canada, and TWO Euge press conferences, now comes word that Corey Locke has won the MVP of the AHL. Congratulations to Corey for the award, but please no more emails or comments about how since he's MVP that he should be in the NHL again. That door has long since closed on Corey.

Thoughts on him winning MVP?

Breaking News: Murray Returns As GM For 3 More Years

Bryan Murray has signed a 3 year extension to return as General Manager of the Ottawa Senators. This is hardly a shock to anyone following the team, as Melnyk has a man crush on BM the GM for some reason.

Thoughts on Murray returning?

Spezza Named To Team Canada

Jason Spezza playing for Team Canada
Last night in a CBC interview, Jason Spezza said he would love to play for Canada at the 2011 World Championship in Slovakia. Well today his dream is official and Spezza will participate for Team Canada at the World's. The way he is playing at the moment, his inclusion is a no brainer and will help us out a lot. I've been very impressed with Jason lately and this is just adding more to it. Congrats on wearing the Red & White Jason.

Thoughts on Spezza suiting up for Canada?

The Melnyk Presser & HNIC Interview

This is the video from Eugene Melnyk's press conference, where nothing was really answered. He said a lot of vague things and rambled on, like we might expect from the Euge. Nothing concrete, but we did find out that Cory Clouston is not an afterthought already as a coach for next season, which is somewhat surprising from everything I've heard, but then again, the Euge is unpredictable I suppose.

Sens End Home Season On High Note

Ryan Shannon celebrates the game winner in OT by Filip Kuba
It may have been a tough season to endure, but the Sens sure provided some great entertainment to the home crowd tonight. They nearly blew it, giving up a goal with just 11 seconds left to Mike Cammaleiri, before unlikely hero Filip Kuba won it for the good guys in OT.

GDP #81: Sens v Habs

Well here we are, the final home game of the 2010-11 regular season at Scotiabank Place. It will be the end of what has been a very long season to say the least. Tonight we take on the Montreal Canadiens, looking to end things on a high note I suppose, though I really just want the best draft pick possible with 2 games left.

EJ McGuire Passes Away

EJ McGuire at the 2008 NHL Draft in Ottawa
Sad day in Sens Town, as former Sens assistant coach EJ McGuire passed away today at the age of 58 after losing his battle with cancer. EJ was an assistant during the first three years of our rebirth, difficult times indeed back then. At the time of his death he was VP of the Central Scouting Bureau.

Shoutout to the Binghamton Senators, who have now officially made the AHL playoffs. At least one of our teams is doing decently. Let's hope they have a nice playoff run this spring.

To take advantage of the food credit ticket deal, all of you have to do is click here and enter the word SPRING as your promo code and voila! Enjoy the final home game of 2010-11 in person. Ray Emery Is As Good At Acting As He Is At Being Punctual

Back in August I told you about Ottawa native and singer Keshia Chante dating former Sen Ray Emery. I found this out because he was playing her love interest in her newest music video. Since that time I've been anticiptating the release to see his acting chops.

Sens Lose, Yet Win

Jason Spezza scores on the Leafs goalie James Remimer in tonight's 3-2 loss
I didn't get to see the game but I saw the box score, a Sens 3-2 loss to the Leafs, which sits just fine with me, as we can't afford to get any more points today, especially with Florida losing as well.

If anyone has any thoughts on the game, especially about Da Costa, I'd love to hear them

Post game thoughts?

GDP #79: Sens v Leafs

Two things that are annoying - Taylor Swift and the Maple Leafs
The big news for tonight's battle of Ontario is the debut of highly touted Stephane Da Costa (wearing #24) and the fact that if we win we basically eliminate the Leafs and if we lose we get better draft position. I'm going for the latter because it helps OUR team and the Leafs aren't going to make it anyways.

Karlsson Hurt

Karlsson scoring on Boston's Tim Thomas at the All Star Game Skills Competition
No this isn't an April Fools joke unfortunately. Erik Karlsson was cut in the thigh last night by a skate and required 25 stitches to seal it up. Luckily for him and Sens fans, no muscle was cut so he should be ok, but will sit out Saturday against Toronto and maybe the rest of the year. Could have been a lot worse. Get well soon young Erik.
