Sens Get Closer To Playoff Berth

It wasn't pretty but in the end they got the job done. The Sens were up 3-0 in the first period, though they had been outplayed by the Flyers. The Sens had the lead thanks to some weak goals and some outstanding play by Craig Anderson. The 2nd period was a different story, as the Sens let 3 goals in to allow Philly to tie the game. The 3rd was 20 minutes of neither team wanting to give up their point, which brought the game to a thrilling OT period. Once again Anderson was spectacular, making several stunning saves to force a shootout. Read scored for the Flyers but that's all, as Spezza and Michalek scored for the Sens, giving them the 4-3 shootout win and the massive 2 points they need to get closer to a playoff spot.

Now we scoreboard watch. If the hated Leafs can beat the Sabres tonight, the Sens will clinch a playoff spot with a win tomorrow afternoon against Long Island.

Is Spezza The NHL's Most Underrated Player?

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity. Whether it's positive or negative, at least they're talking about you. The worst thing is to be forgotten about. The last part is where I'd like to start. You see while Jason Spezza is known throughout the city of Ottawa, it seems the rest of the hockey world has forgotten about him for the most part, at least when it comes mentioning the game's elite players.

When a discussion pops up about who's the best in the world, you will always get the obvious picks. There's Sidney Crosby, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Malkin, the Sedin's, Lidstrom, King Henrik and even Phil Kessel will get a mention, but never Jason Spezza. He's been getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment, no respect!

Zibanejad Gets His Backup Quarterback On

Sens prospect Mika Zibanejad made the news on Thursday, but not for the reason you'd think. While it's true that he had a pair of goals in the Swedish Elite League's relegation playoffs for his club Djurgraden, he made news for Tebowing after hist first goal. It hit Puck Daddy and the rest they say is history. Tebowing is of course the phenomenon associated with New York Jets backup QB Tim Tebow.

Thoughts on Zibby doing some Tebowing. Is it cool or lame?

Help Spezza And Karlsson Land NHL 13 Cover

While we have no say in Erik Karlsson winning the Norris, or Jason Spezza winning the Hart this season, we can help them in the voting of the cover of NHL 13 from EA Sports. The video game maker has set up a website to vote on who will land the prestigious cover of next year's game. You can vote as many times as you'd like, so make it happen Sens Army. To vote click here.

Well Played Winnipeg

Hilarious picture from Monday's game in The Peg, where head coach Paul MacLean returned to his old stomping grounds. Kudos to whoever snapped this one but lame to bring an erasable board to an NHL game. Then again, I don't think anyone from the city of Winnipeg should be making fun of anyone. Ever.

Sens Ink Wideman To 2 Year ELC

The Ottawa Senators have announced that they have signed Miami of Ohio player Chris Wideman to a 2 year entry level contract. The 5'10 defenceman was the Sens 4th round pick, 100th overall way back in 2009. He had 24 points in 41 games this season and will now finish the year in Binghamton of the AHL. Wideman becomes the 3rd native of St Louis in the Sens organization at the moment, the others being Ben Bishop and Mike McKenna. Get to know Chris Wideman after the jump.

True Story

This made me LoL. The Karlsson for the Norris Trophy train is gaining steam. Hop on board or be left behind.

Spezza's Dirty Dangle

In case you missed it from last night's game, here is Jason Spezza's dirty dangle against the Winnipeg Jets that allowed Kyle Turris to tap the puck into the empty net. Assist of the year?

Headlines, No Drake

It seems the Karlsson for the Norris Trophy campaign is starting to pick up more steam, especially in media outside of the capital finally. He's just having a season you can't ignore. This was the front page of the Yahoo sports page last night, accompanied by the article explaining why the award for the NHL's best defenceman should be coming to the 21 year old Senators player.

Ironically on the same night Darren Pang decided to tweet this ridiculousness, Karlsson was a +5 with 3 points in a 6-4 win against Winnipeg, bringing his lead to 27 points over Brian Campbell in defenceman scoring and drawing even in plus/minus with Shea Weber at +19.

Do you think Karlsson deserves the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman?

Sens Take A Wild One In The Peg

The Sens took the ice in Winnipeg needing 2 points and that's what they got. While the 6-4 win wasn't pretty, it made up for it in the excitement department, with the teams trading goals at a furious clip. The reffing was once again questionable on several occasions and the Jets goals were all iffy, but the Sens refused to go away and came back time after time, securing the much needed W in the end. What a great way to start out the roadie.

Shane Prince Player Diary Entry #3

Ice cream at The Cold Stone Cremery
This week was the first week of playoffs for us. So after 3 games in 3 days the previous weekend, our coach gave us the Monday off to rest and hang out a little bit.

On Monday the weather was beautiful and I realized I didn't have any shorts here in Ottawa, so I decided to go out and buy some with Marc Zanetti. We went downtown and walked around a bit and just enjoyed the nice weather and grabbed some lunch. I ended up buying my shorts at NRML, because that's where I buy 99 percent of my clothes.

Craig Anderson - The Wonder Years

A few weeks ago I posted a childhood picture of Jason Spezza. Today it's a high school picture of Sens netminder Craig Anderson. It's my way of saying welcome back to the lineup. Love that 90's middle part. Happy lazy Sunday. Follow Craig on twitter @CraigAnderson41

The Return Of Anderson

Good news Senators fans, as today we learned that starting goaltender Craig Anderson will play tomorrow night in Montreal at the Bell Centre. Anderson has missed 12 games so far, due to a self inflicted injury while cutting some chicken. Over that span the Sens went 5-5-2, with a combination of Robin Lehner and Ben Bishop starting. I imagine most Sens fans would have taken that record when we first found out about Anderson's miscue. Alex Auld will now be a healthy scratch and Bishop will be the backup. Welcome back Andy.

Shane Prince Wins Kilrea Award

Sens prospect and Ottawa 67's star Shane Prince won the Brian Kilrea Award for community service for his work in the anti bullying campaign in Ottawa high schools and for being a team ambassador at many team charitable functions. Congrats to Shane on the accomplishment and for making our city better. You can see him in action for the 67's tonight and Friday, as they take on the Belleville Bulls in the OHL playoffs. If you can make it out come support a Sens prospect and a great guy. You can also check Shane out every Monday here on Sens Town, as he writes a player diary for the site.

Stone Named To WHL's Eastern 1st All Star Team

Sens prospect Mark Stone has been named to the WHL's Eastern Conference First All Star Team today. The Winnipeg native and Brandon Wheat Kings player finished second in the Western Hockey League's scoring race with 123 points in just 66 games. Pretty impressive numbers from the kid who also starred for Team Canada at the World Jr's this year. Stone was a steal for the Sens, as he was drafted in the 6th round, 178th overall at the 2010 NHL Draft. Congrats to Mark. You can follow him on twitter @m_stoner16

Shane Prince Player Diary Entry #2

This week before my games started on Friday, I just had a standard week hanging out with some of the guys and some friends. I went on a couple mall walks and enjoyed some time in the market downtown. Our team obviously also had practice every day with the playoffs coming up quickly.

This week was another tough week for our team. We finished the regular season with a 3 in 3 weekend all against teams in the top half of the eastern conference standings.

Shit Sens Fans Say

Sens St Patty's Day Jerseys

In honor of St Patrick's Day, the Sens will be wearing these Irish themed practice jerseys for warmup tonight against the Leafs, before signing them and auctioning them off for charity. I have to say they came out very well and will look pretty awesome in your collection should you decide to make a bid. Well done Sens org and Happy St Patty's day to everyone. Let's get this W tonight.

Leaf Fan Confused

Anyone else notice the Leaf fan in blue hat and Phaneuf jersey sitting a few rows from the ice during last night's game between their 2 biggest rivals? Only a Leafs fan would do this right?

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Happy St Patty's Day

Just wanted to wish everyone a quick Happy St Patty's from me to you. The Sens are in first place at the moment and we've got a big game with the Leafs tonight, so there's plenty of reason to celebrate in the Capital. Just make sure everyone is safe and has a good, peaceful time. Cheers and have some green beers.

Sens Take Over First Place

With tonight's W the Sens have taken over the Northeast division lead and are now the 2 seed in the Eastern Conference incredibly. Sure they went 0-9 on the PP but who cares when you get the win in OT still. Everyone celebrate the big W. All we do is win win win. Cheers!

Sens Roman Gladiator Tat

The latest edition of fans getting a tat to show their Sens pride, this time going with the Roman gladiator theme. It's not for me but it is well done. Hopefully it wasn't a nod to this debacle from a few years ago. Remember to show your Sens pride all weekend with a couple of big games against our rivals that can have us in first place in the division if things go right. Have a Sens tat? Send it in to

Kyle Turris Doesn't Go Chalk In His NCAA Bracket

Pro athlete's aren't immune to the madness of March either, as Sens centre Kyle Turris proves by filling out his own NCAA bracket. He says he hasn't followed college ball to much this year but he made some upset picks. He's got Florida State, North Carolina, Kentucky and Missouri in the Final Four, with UNC taking the title. He has his alma mater Wisconsin going out to Syracuse in the sweet 16, which is fine with me being a huge Cuse fan and all. You gotta love the madness.

Alfie Named Sens Masterton Nominee

Thirty nine year old Captain Daniel Alfredsson has been named the Ottawa Senators Masterton Trophy nominee according to the vote from the local chapter of the professional hockey writers association (PHWA).  The Bill Masterton Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL played who who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game. Once all the nominees from each team are in, the PHWA will vote on the winner. Good luck to Alfie.

Yahoo Is Confused

At first glance there's nothing weird about this screen grab from yahoo's sport page last night, unless you look a bit closer. It was about 30 minutes after the Sens lost to Montreal 3-2 in a shootout, as you can see under the photo, they got that part right. However, notice anything wrong with the photo? Oh ya, the Sens wore their heritage jersey last night and the Habs wore their white jersey, which means that Yahoo used a picture from an earlier game from months ago in their report. Sloppy work guys.

Sens Fall In Shootout For 2nd Game In A Row

The Senators got off to a flying start but didn't capitalize on their scoring chances and fell for the second straight game in a shootout, this time 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in the first of a home and home between the two rivals. Erik Cole started things out for the Habs, but Colin Greening tied it up off a scramble less than 30 seconds later. Then down 2-1 midway through the 3rd, Erik Karlsson rescued us again to tie the game at 2's with his 19th of the year, which was his 70th point this season and tied the all time Sens franchise record of goals by a defenceman in a year. We had several chances to win it in OT, most notably on open net that was missed by Gilroy, but fell in the shootout after failing to score on any of our 3 chances. MTL again on Friday at SBP

Schneider Signs With Sens

The Senators have signed UConn Husky Cole Schneider to a 2 year entry level deal the club announced. He will head to Binghamton to finish the season after signing the amateur try out contract. That means he`s with the Sens organization for this year + 2 more.  He leaves UConn with several scoring records and is 6ft2 and 180 lbs and is a left winger. He joins the long list of NCAA UFA's to sign with the Sens, such as Bobby Bulter, Stephane Da Costa and Jesse Winchester. Let's hope he turns out a bitter better than those guys. To get the full report read this piece by Joy Lindsay.

Thoughts on the signing?

Silfverberg Wins Swedish Elite League MVP

The good news just keeps coming, as today Sens prospect Jakob Silfverberg was named MVP of the Swedish Elite League. Silfverberg, who plays from Brynas IF, was 2nd in league scoring with 24 goals and 54 points in 49 games this season. He is currently in the midst of the SEL playoffs, but there's a small possibility that he could come over to join the Sens for the playoffs if his team in Sweden is knocked out by then. I've seen Silfverberg play in training camp and he is definitely NHL ready, so pencil him in the top 6 for the 2012-13 season. At just 21, the future looks very bright for the Sens and Jakob. Congratulations on the massive honor.

Sens, B-Sens & Jackals Stadium Review is a website that reviews all the different venues in sports and ranks them in categories such as location, food, atmosphere etc. It's definitely a good place to go to check out a venue before attending a game there on your next roadie, so check em out. Here's the reviews for SBP , the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena where the Bingahmton Senators play and even First Arena, where the Sens ECHL outfit, the Elmira Jackals lace em up.

Do you agree with their assessment?

Shoutout To Merivale High School

If any of you were watching Thursday night's Sens game, you may have noticed the broadcast showing some very cool fan art in the crowd featuring several Sens players. Well details have emerged and it was done my students from Merivale High School, who took multiple panels held be different students to make one big picture. The lucky players immortalized were Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson pictured above. See the Spezza and Karlsson one's after the jump and a major shoutout to the Merivale students who pulled this off so well. Very well done you youths.

Shane Prince Joins Sens Town

Sens prospect and Ottawa 67's star Shane Prince will be joining Sens Town as the new player diary writer. He will taking over from Max Gratchev, who is no longer in the Sens organization. Starting this Monday and every following Monday, Shane will be giving us a behind the scenes look at the life of a hockey player, including team updates, personal updates and what he gets up to in his free time, plus there will also be personal pictures included as well.

Shane sits 5th in OHL scoring at the moment with 40 goals and 42 assists, good for 82 points in just 52 games for the Ottawa 67's and was drafted 61st overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft by the Senators. He had a very nice training camp and impressed a lot of people in the organization. Come back every Monday to see the progress of a future Sen and Ottawa hockey star.

R.I.P. To The Greatest Rapper Of All Time

It's insane to think that the greatest rapper of all time died 15 years ago now, but it's true. The Notorious B.I.G. was killed 15 years ago today on March 9th, 1997 in Los Angeles. The Murder remains unsolved. I will always remember it vividly as I was a huge Biggie fan and I was also in NYC at the time of his death and the city was going crazy over it. He was without a doubt the best that ever did it on the mic and if you needed any more proof of his greatness, look at the jersey he rocked. Rest in peace Christopher Wallace.

Sens Get Big W Against NYR

The Sens sure looked good tonight, getting a gutsy 4-1 win over the East's best team the New York Rangers. Though the Blueshirts were minus a King in goal, the Sens played a solid game tonight and deserved the win, despite being outshot 17-7 after 2. It sure was nice seeing guys like Turris, Foligno and Zack Smith chip in with some goals for once. If our 3rd and 4th lines contribute we're hard to beat. Now on to a big game on Saturday against the much improved and streaking Buffalo Sabres at SBP.

Zack Attack Sweatshirt

Awesome fan made sweatshirt designed by Michael Bradley that pays homage to Zack Smith and of course the legendary band from Saved By The Bell. No word if these will be available for purchase soon or not but if they are put me down for one. These are awesome.

Jersey Foul 92

First off this jersey is a knockoff, as you can tell by the different color of the jersey, plus the horrible numbering and lettering, but what really makes this a foul is the captain's C on Fisher's jersey. Sacrilege.

Greening v Aulie

An excellent tilt from last night's 7-3 win between Colin Greening and Keith Aulie. This was the fight portion of Greening's glorious Gordie Howe hat trick.

Karlsson Fined $2500 For Slash

Erik Karlsson will be $2500 lighter in the wallet today after being fined for the slash he took on Florida's Sean Bergenheim on Sunday night. Seems pretty light to me considering the severity of the slash really, but it's the first time the youngster has been fined, so I'm sure that played into the decision. No worries though, EK65 will sign a massive deal at the end of the season, so $2500 is peanuts to him. Let's just hope he gets his game back on track tonight after his worst game of the year on Sunday.

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Bishop In, Lehnsanity Out

The Senators face a must win tonight in Tampa Bay after losing their past 2 games in the middle of a trying to secure a playoff spot, but you won't be seeing Robin Lehner in net this evening. Despite playing very well the past 4 games, Robin Lehner has been reassigned to Bingahmton and newly acquired metminded Ben Bishop has been called up to the show and will get the start tonight. Bishop is widely regarded as one of the top goalies in the AHL and the most NHL ready goalie in the minors. One thing we do know is it's safe to say that Alex Auld has become more than an afterthought in the Sens plans.

Photo Diary: The Razor's Revenge

Friday night was the return of one of the most memorable character's in modern history, if not THE most memorable, since the organization decided to part ways with the brash netminder nearly 4 years ago via a buyout. Despite all his faults, Emery remains a very popular figure with Sens Army. Here is the photo diary of his return to Ottawa starting with the duckets that got me in the door.

Sens Choke Away 2 Goal Lead With Another Poor Effort

The Senators got off to a flying start, racking up a 2 goal lead after 1 period before letting Florida score 4 unanswered goals to take it 4-2 in a game the Senators needed to win. It wasn't so much that they lost, as much as it was how they lost. For the 2nd straight game they had a bad compete level and were beaten to the puck almost the whole night. Erik Karlsson had his worst game of the year and looked frustrated most of the evening. The Panthers didn't play particularly well, but the Sens handed them the game and didn't deserve to win. It was the Panthers first win in 4 attempts against the Sens this year. On to Tampa for a big game on Tuesday.

In Defence Of Ray Emery

Friday night will mark Ray Emery's return to the city that made him famous for the first time since being bought out nearly 4 years ago by the Senators. It was sort of the ending of an era, although we didn't know it at the time. With the new NHL rules, the turnover is amazing. To put things in perspective, there's only 4 players on our roster from the 2007 Stanley Cup finalist team. Yes 4! Ray Emery could have been the 5th.

He was supposed to be the building block of a team that could compete year after year, but was run out of town in large part because of the media, and because someone had to take the fall for a team that massively underachieved, and the flashy, loud, injured, under performing goalie was the easy victim. Four years later I find myself rooting for Emery. I think he got more than a raw deal in Ottawa, but will the fans feel the same way tomorrow night at SBP?

The Senators Will Be Paying Chicago's Ray Emery $562,500 To Play Against Them Tonight

When the Ottawa Senators parted ways with Ray Emery 4 years ago via a buy out, they owed him some money. This is the last year they have to pay him thankfully, but that means that Chicago's starting goalie tonight will be being paid $562,500 by the team he is playing against. You can't make this stuff up.

Thursday, March 01, 2012

Sens Army was loving the Lehnsanity name yesterday but it seems they've come up with a new one based on some insurance commercials. Robin Lehner is the toast of the town at the moment. Funny how quickly things can change isn't it.
